Coyotes On The Move

This will only help increase the number of coyotes, I hope you know that, you are upsetting any hope that any natural balance might happen.

I appreciate your concern. After I shoot all the hogs.......that will be a while...I'll start in on the coyotes.

I'd really rather have the coyotes than the hogs.

Ferel hogs really have no known predator. Nothing will control them naturally.

Sometimes I leave a dead wild boar carcass out as coyote bait, quite often though, just more wild pigs show up to cannibalize the carcass.....

we've never seen nor heard of coyotes around our property in the almost 3 years we been hear.

yet 4 days ago the wife gave a somewhat frantic call from the porch that a coyote was chaseing the chickens in the front yard.

i grabed the .22 and headed out just in time to see it trot off into the back woods with one of my buff orps in its mouth.

found another one dead in the yard and a third didnt come home that night.

Ive been on watch every night at dusk and have seen him 2 other times but never long enough to get a shot on the guy.

This is war! Sorry about your chickens. Maybe getting off a couple shots in their direction, even though you don't expect to hit them, would be a deterence.
Dave.

They are yipping and howling all over our property here in North Central Florida and they make great target practice for my handloads too! :D

This dude chomped my favorite prized Toulouse Gander and a number of my pet Mallard Ducks before I put an end to his free lunches....

Skypup, I'm assuming that is .223 ammo you're using. Any particular bullet you favor for the coyote's?

We have found the .243 85 grain BTHP works best in our situation. I'd really like to get an AR with a .243 barrel.

I reload my 5.56mm cartridges with Hornady 75 grain BTHP bullets and that is what I used on the coyotes and bobcat out to about 225 yards, which is the best I can see with my Burris 1-4X Tactical scope. Of course, you need a 1:7" twist to properly stabilize those in a .223 barrel, which my SIG 556 has.

I'm pretty sure that the new Remington R-15 AR type rifle comes in .243!!! :D

In these parts, bobcats are rare so you'd probably have to get a permit to kill one even if it was getting your livestock....don't really know, but the state DNR is pretty active. On the other hand, I'd guess coyotes are free game. If it was my animals the bobcat was getting I'd SSS it.

It really is a complete and total waste to shoot a bobcat since they are solitary hunters that occupy a highly defined territory of about 10 square miles which is defined by their scat, no other bobcat will cross into that territory without a fight to the death.

So, shooting one bobcat results in 2 or 3 other bobcats fighting it out for the same territory, which will be taken over in no time by one of the competing bobcats in the area.

I will never shoot another bobcat no matter how many ducks, geese, and chickens they manage to steal because about 30 days after I shot this one, another one had moved in and taken up residence in his territory.

I have seen him numerous times and had him in my sights and just watched him go about his business, they are beautiful animals.
