Coyotes with my with dogs

I too, have a coyote problem here in the city. I've seen them try to lure my little toy dogs into the dark shadows at night. The coyotes would run away like they were scared to death, then stop in the shadows behind a bush or shrub waiting for the little guys to come chasing after them.

They're sneaky, and they are not afraid of humans, around here at least.

I do sympathize with their plight, being pushed out of their territory. We've just built and built, and now they have no place to go. But my yard isn't on the option list.

Better make darn sure that all your dogs are up to date on their Distemper Virus Vaccinations as Coyotes oftern carry that and the fatality rate can be over 50%, especially in younger dogs.

Here when they get too comfy they get shot and strung up around the place. That helps them stay back a few months. They know where they will be shot or left alone. My German sheperd malesusuallydowna few a year around here and my neighbor kills them on site. They stay back but all around here they are over run.

Make sure you report the coyotes - call 311. Without a doubt the coyotes are a danger to your dogs. Keep the dogs inside, unless you are outside with them. Coyotes are a pack animal and they will have no problems killing any house pet. Even a big dog doesn't stand a chance against a few coyotes.

The kids and I just shined one tonight about 1/4 mile from home, seen it on the other side of the county drain with headlights, thought too small for deer, and put the a few more candlepower on it, all alone. pic is with 1.3 megapixel phone (pretty much useless at night)

My dogs are a cockapoo and 10 yo bassett, easy pickens for 2-3 yotes but I just dont see them being harrassed as close to the house as they stay.

Here in Douglas County, (Oregon) the Coyotes take a few Sheep and Calves each year. The ranchers and rural residences loose an occasional domestic pet to the Coyotes. The Cougar here are becoming more of a problem with the hunting restrictions in place.
My Uncle moved to Christmas Valley, Oregon years ago to run a hay operation. That's in Central Oregon. He had three house dogs and two Blue Heeler working dogs. The First night he let the house dogs out he lost two of them within minutes. The next night the other one was taken. The heelers were always out and loose, were never touched or threatened.

At the farm, my S-I-L's standard poodle was attacked by two coyotes, 50 foot from the house in broad daylight. It sent her running outside, screaming to chase them off. The only thing you can say is that they are brazen. They have little fear of humans. The will keep their distance but they are not intimidated at all. They often flop down and watch you working around the place. How come they always show up when you're unarmed? Come outside with a gun and they're nowhere to be seen.

The oldsters around here tell me that they are more likely to attack male dogs. I think that it's a territorial thing. Female dogs they will sometimes breed.

Anyway, I don't have much time for them and we're surrounded by them.

Watch out for your little dogs, and not just little ones. A neighbor lost his Doberman Pinchers last year. He let them out at night and they took off barking and growling. He said he knew they were in trouble by howling and squeeling. One came back, the other one didn't. The one that made it back was so badly injured it had to be put down the next day. Be careful.
