Yes they are more than your budget permits. But with reasonable care will outlast a MTD 10 to 1. Used ones are easy to find. under 2k.

I didn't mean to bash peoples equipment choices (Craftsman / MTD) But our grand fathers wouldn't even consider buying a machine built the way these new low end machines are.
Everything is becoming so disposable today. Throw it away and buy a new one. This causes many problems like waste disposal, never mind the energy (oil) used to build a new low end machine.
It's also sad to see old quality manufacturers like Troy Built going out of business because they can't compete price wise with what the consumer considers a comparable product for way less $.

Not sure who owns who but my Cub Cadet ride on was made by MTD. Sticker under seat. Cub Cadet has various lines, cadillac model made by Cub themselves I think, middle of the road made by MTD. My dealer told me last year that (not sure who is the parent company) Cub owns MTD or visa versa who also owns Toro (who I think make Yardman). Probably when you get to the top there all owned by one holding company.

I took off those safety handles and put on cable clamps and hung a 6 pack beer cooler inbetween the main handels, then took that stupid 3 speed shifter opened the housing and use an awl to posistion the drive gear I want
