Check use is definitely a regional thing. Growing up in Montana we used checks for everything, even seen people use them in the McDonald's drive through.

Lived for a while in So Cal and checks were pretty rare, had to have a 'check guarantee card' etc etc. Due to all the scammers.

Lived for a while in Vegas.... just as all the check scammers from So Cal where arriving  Real fast you couldn't use a check anywhere without a 'check guarantee card'.

Now live in the Boise area and people still take checks although more and more you see the 'no checks' signs at businesses. The 'check guarantee card' pretty much morphed into Debit cards. Some (all?) check clearing systems now use the debit system. You can write a check, they run it through the register right there just like a debit transaction.

As for the OP's comments, I always put 'Cash Only' in all my CL ads. If you have the money you can get it in cash, simple as that.

Cash is king. All other payment methods are subject to being cancelled. Even the good old Money Order can be cancelled.

Buy a Car from me and you will pay cash. I'll even go to your bank with you to make it easier. Anyone that believes a check, money order, or any other payment is as good as cash is mistaken. The other methods may clear fine but can be cancelled very easily.

I sold a VW Beetle to a guy several years ago and I heard him mention to the Wachovia Teller that I would not take a Cashier's Check or Money Order. The Teller responded "I fully understand -- we can cancel either of those".

As for Craigslist -- It's Cash Only. Taking a check from a stranger is just plain crazy...

If I see a deal or a want on craigslist, I do not call if I do not have time to go to the bank to get cash.

Frankly, I am thinking about insisting on gold or silver bullion as payment for my next Craig's sale.

Let us know the respond you get. :)

A guy was telling me he sold a $7000 truck through CL and the guy showed up with it all in $10 bills the counting took some time. :)

700 pieces of paper would be a stack.

Just remember that if they show up with cash, it's a federal crime to refuse to accept that as payment...

...Unless, of course, you're not in the US.:D

A friend of mine thought he was getting some kind of gold or something coins that were worth $300 each based on weight, but after he traded, he found out that based on purity they were only worth $165 each, and ended up losing $135 on each coin.

So unless you have the ability to weigh and test the actual purity of that gold.....

Geeeesh. Humor, guys, humor.

BTW, yes, I would know the daily spot price, and would likely know the coins value based on percentage of precious metals. But.... it was satirical humor, that is all.:D:D

Just wait until the inflation starts to deflate the value of the US dollar...the cause and effect from printing all that money that we don't have...

The dollar may still be legal tender but if history is any indicator it won't have much value against other world currencies...Some are speculating that it could be worse than anything previous...

In the worst case scenarios...CL will become a "trading" list as bartering will become much more popular than before...

Your scenario might seem far fetched, but who knows? It might be more prophetic than any of us know.

I just noticed last night that CL has spread from the major cities in Tennessee to a smaller community called Cookeville. There's is a more established on line advertising site in that area already. So I wondered why CL opened another site for that community?

I suppose that if they garner in nearly all of the on-line advertising and then start charging for it, CL can make some bucks.

How do they do this free advertising anyway?

If I remember corectly, the IRS still has laws concerning paying taxes on the value of bartered goods as income for the goods you traded away.:D:D:laughing:

Is that kind of like there are still 55 MPH signs on many roads that never get violated? :D

It is a fact the black market is going to boom with the planned tax increases. If VAT becomes fact we will see a huge jump in the value of our old equipment but titles will be required for everything so we do not forget the tax man accidently. They have started that with trailers already here.

They charge to list rental property, apartments and such. CL already brings in PLENTY for itself.

To answer the OP, I wouldn't feel bad at all if someone got bent on CL about not taking a check. The buyer is crazy to think you'd take a check from someone you don't know. The fault is on the buyer. You don't need to write "Cash Only", it's understood.

I expect CL plans to drill down as deep as they can in every state.

Cookeville has a population over 3000 I think. :)

The local services can not complete on a national scale. CL will upgrade to become more like E-bay search wise I expect.

Question:...Where's the best place to find used/unwanted tractor implements / farm equipment etc... besides CL...

Answer:...the local scrap yard...commodities prices on things like scrap iron are a very good indicator that can offer some insight into where things are headed....The current unemployment situation and the price of scrap iron has generated a lot of new people in the scrap/salvage business...

The same way people are selling all their old gold...they are selling their old box blades etc. et.al to the scrappers...

I'm not predicting any gloom and doom times but do think we will have to bear the negative effect of over-extending the national line of credit...

I have to agree here. We can't keep overspending like money has no end. There is a point where the interest payment will be larger than what the government takes in. Any citizen with a debt to income ratio as bad as our government has would have been bankrupt long ago.:confused2:
