Ah, the Lake Maribou commemorative photo archive, library, and visitor registration kiosk.

Lets see a show of hands. All in favor?

I think that is a rule that applies to most of us here ;)

Here is a shot of our mini-ranch, from across the pond, though not a picturesque as Eddie's. Tried to get some bass to show their teeth last weekend but they are still hunkered down.

The second shot is a few weeks ago. Last weekend it was 70 degrees and clear. But I just got a weather alert saying we were going to get snow again this weekend! Sheesh!

Great pictures. The one with the snow is something I'm hoping to get of Lake Marabou one of these days. Twice this year we had snow, but the one day that it started to accumulate, it didn't last. Guess we just had a dusting and it wasn't enough to show up in my pictures.

Yup!!

Thanks Eddie. At this point in the year, we would be happy to export our cold snap to Texas :)
We have had one bizarre Spring. But at least it hasn't been extreme-type damaging weather like some folks, so we try to not complain!
Well, except for my wife when she has to go clean the horse paddock at 0'dark-thirty in the morning...

Phil,

The link wouldn't open up the video, so I just broused around a little at their website. For whatever reason, I couldn't get any of their video's to open up and play for me, so that's disapointing. I find it fasinating what those things can do!!!!

Has it warmed up enough to start digging on your pond again? Lake Marabou is a foot from being full again and the grass is out of control. I'm obsesses with finishing up my pasture and getting my food plot in, but then I want to smooth out the dam with a bunch more dirt. There is enough bermuda grass growing now that it should take over the new dirt that I add to the dam fairly quickly. I'm hoping to fill in all my ruts and rough spots on a gradual basis to make it nice to drive over.

Eddie, the videos don't work for me either, but I get a message that that website wants to install "Quick Time" from Apple, Inc. on my computer and, if I trust it, to click to let it install. I'll bet the videos would then work, however, I don't intend to install "Quick Time" from Apple to see if they would.

Although Quick Time is an Apple product, originally developed for the running on Apple computers, the version in question is a well respected and time proven video player for IBM PC compatible systems. It is as safe as software gets. If after you use it you don't want it taking up space you can elect to have it uninstalled. It uninstalls cleanly. (Unless of course it is an odd numbered Thursday during leapyear under a full moon.)

Yep go to apple.com and download QT. It worked for me. CNC table router cutting out some raised panel doors...for painting.

I didn't mean to imply that there was anything wrong with Quick Time; only that I don't need it or want it taking up space on my computer.

That is OK Bird, we respect the tendency on the part of older citizens to be resistant to change. ;) ;)

You don't know the half of it, Pat. I've been trying to read some of the manuals with these 2 new TVs and VCR/DVD recorder and their remotes, and I'm not sure I have enough education to use this stuff, even if I were younger, and certainly not at my age.:D :D

Bird, The bad news is that the manuals are frequently poorly written which surely does nothing to increase your level of satisfaction. I used to just hate it when I as an electronics and computer professional could read a manual and fail to be able to follow the screwed up directions. HF has some of the worst instructions that I commonly encounter but they are not the only ones with problems.

The poorly translated instructions in pidgin English really irritate me. One example that pops to mind was a professional grade direction finder antenna with a fiber glass dome over the antenna array. It was of Japanese manufacture and it was clearly marked in English... Do not except this cover! Sure I translated it but how lame... It meant don't leave the cover off.

I think the manual to our current Dish system High Definition dual receiver with DVR is about as good as is commonly encountered on this sort of equipment or about a 7-8 on a scale of 10.

The DirecTV installer is suppose to be here in the morning to install their High Definition equipment. I'm hoping they hook everything up right so that it works. I think (or hope?) I can understand the operating instructions, but the hooking up instructions are another matter. I have one VCR/DVD player and one VCR/DVD recorder so some of the connections are different, and of course, two different brands and sizes of TV have different jacks.

I guess if it gets too far over my head, I have a son-in-law that I think will be able to put it all together. At least he ought to be able to; he's put one gigantic LCD HDTV on their living room wall and another on the wall in the game room by the pool table in addition to their "home theater" in the "media" room.

And I thought I was really "up town" when I got my first color TV 40 years ago this Fall. I still remember the first time I ever saw a TV with a remote control. It would turn the power on and off, change channels, and change volume; nothing else. And if the door bell rang or someone dropped a key in the floor while the TV was on, that turned the TV off. In less than a month, the owner returned that TV and exchanged it for one without a remote.:D

Bird, my family got its first TV in the 50's and it didn't get watched all that much. First color set was a hand me down from my FIL in the late 60's. It still had some tubes and the famous Nuvistor! When it went on the blink I tried to fix it, failed (no test gear beyond VOM), pushed it into a corner and tried again about every 6 months for a year or so then got professional help. Isolation brightener and it worked again so I sold it to a neighbor for the cost of the repair. Terrific solid hardwood cabinet, a great piece of furniture but HEAVY.

I never really liked working on a TV, much preferring audio systems and radios (transmitters or receivers.) I have a commercial radiotelephone lisc with ships radar endorsement so am legal to work on transmitters and radar but haven't used in in decades.

Being trained in component level repair is nearly useless on todays equipment which is full of custom IC's. You don't repair a circuit inside an IC. I guess those skills are better than being the guy who adjusted the high button shoe button hole making machine, but not a lot.

I thought I'd share some pictures of Lake Marabou now that it's spring time and I just finished mowing all around it. Last year, it seems that ever time I mowed along the shoreline, I got stuck. This year, it seems like the ground is harder. I never had any issues and was able to get fairly close.

A few new developments around the shoreline are the grasses that have come in. They look really nice and sort of change the look of everything. I don't know what they are, or if they are good or bad. They are growing out into the water, so I'm hoping it's good for the baby fish and minnows. Sort of a safe place to hide from the preditor fish.

The stumps that extend above the water level have grown grass on them. Now they look like lush, green islands. This was never something I thought of, but we're both happy with the suprise.

Water color is still brown from all the rains. We're getting storms that dump an inch really fast, which gives us allot of runnoff. With all the dirt work that I'm doing above the lake, I'm getting it in the lake. Hopefully I'll get my food plot graded out and planted sometime soon.

Eddie

While mowing, I saw my first snake in Lake Marabou. I didn't have my camera, and I don't know what type of snake it was. It was dark colored with light yellow spots on it in a sort of pattern. Any thoughts?

Last year I took some pictures of a plant that we didn't recognize. It never flowered, so we couldn't get any pics to know for sure what it was. Today, we were suprised to see that it had flowers on it!!! Does anybody recognize what it is?

Then I noticed some red berries growing where I'd mowed. At first I thought they were blackberries that hadn't ripened yet, but after looking closer, I think they are stawberries. I've never seen a wild strawberry before, but don't know what else it could be. Anybody know what it is?

The dragon fly cought our attention too. Never seen one quite like it before. There was two of them. They flew like butterflies. Very strange compared to our 'normal' dragonflies.

And the bug is just one of many that we don't have a clue about. Steph spotted it, took the pics of it and we both kept our distance from it!!!

Most bugs around here tend to sting or attack in some way. It's best to leave them alone and let them be.

And of course, being spring, the Honeysuckle is in full bloom Just about anywhere you go on our land, you can smell it. To me, it's probably the best part of spring!!!!!!!!!
