Eddy I was in your neck of the woods yesterday. I drove through tyler texas on my way to Jacksonville. If I had remembered that you were near to tyler I would have come by. I drove highway 175 back to dallas on the way back. Did I get anywhere near you ?

I'm actually real close to Winona, TX but have Tyler zip code. Three miles to Winona, 15 miles to Tyler. Go figure. LOL

When you drove over Interstate 20, depending on what highway you were on, you were close to me then. My land is half a mile from the Interstate.

PM me the next time you're in the area.

Thanks Eddy I will next time. I had forgotten that you lived near tyler until tonight. I probably would not have had time to stop by. I missed my plane tuesday because the counter guy decided that me being there at 25 minutes before the flight left instead of the required 30 was enough reason not to let me on the plane. Even though they were still loading and I had no luggage to check. I had to catch a later flight out and that took me longer to get to Jacksonville that I had expected. Next time I am down that way I will send you a PM and try to stop by

If you stayed on 175 the whole time, just a little close. Actually JAcksonville is close to our weekend place...*********, then Elkhart to the south. My guess is Eddie's lake is no more than 1/4mile from I-20 feeder road.

If I would have realized so many people to see down there I would have stayed an extra day and just flown back wednesday. I dont know when I will be going back that way again but If I do I will be sending out messages and trying to visit some people.

My brother brought his boat by the other day, so we took it down to the lake and went for a ride. Since it's only 4 acres, we're not able to go very far, but it was still fun. The kids were a little nervous, which is expected if you knew my brother. After a few laps and splashing around, he tought them how to drive it. I was a nervous wreck, but it was his boat and he said there was nothing that they could run into that would hurt it, so I got out of the way and took pictures.

Alissa is 12 and Peyton will be 8 next week. Each took their turn driving it around without any throttle. Just steering at idle. Of the two, Peyton is the better driver. He looks ahead, plans his turns and has a quick reaction time to anything that comes up. Alissa scares us. She will drive straight into a tree from the middle of a two acre field!!! Hopefully, drivng the boat and having more room to manuver, will help her driving skills.

I'd be a wreck to! With my little jon boat and a 9.8 merc if I hit a stump and lose the tiller it'll kick one way and toss everyone out of the boat. plus with the torque of the motor you have to hold on. My 9.8 is 40 years old so there is no overboard cut off switch.

but is that a jet motor? looks like some big 4 stroke up there. That boat is also a bit wider so it should be more stable.

Rob,

It's a Pro Drive outboard with a Briggs & Stratton engine. It's a specialty type motor for getting around in shallow water and through obsticles. It's also kind of pricey.

Its nice that your brother is so generous as to allow your kids to learn on his expensive equipment. I am sure they will be talking about that for months, looks like they had fun. I hope before my kids get too old I have someplace like that for them to learn/have fun with a boat.

Hi Eddie
Just read through your thread.
Congratulations on your lake, what an accomplishment.
Your resourcefulness and ability to assimilate new information along with problem solving is impressive. Your thread provides a wealth of information, thank you.
We have purchased 21 acres in south eastern NC 2 years ago, that we hope to retire to. Originally, our plans were to retire next year but with the housing problems and equipment needed for the mini farm we have delayed it a yr. The land is next to SC, and about 30 mi from the ocean. It includes a 4 acre pond that has been left go. We think it was created by using an excavator to dig a large trench around the edge and use the dirt for the banks. Once retired, we hope to clean it up and remove some of the dirt in the center. I would like to start a thread when we get closer to starting the project. I created a sub domain (added section) to our main web site with a few pictures of how it looked originally.

Vern,

Welcome to TBN!!

Nice to hear you enjoyed the thread, and thank you for the kind words.

Your pond sure looks like a moat. I'll be curious to see how you get the middle section dug out. I'm thinking that you will have to fill it in to create a crossing to the middle and then start digging and hauling. I hope its dry enough in there.

Digging dirt is always easy, hauling it off is where the real work and money comes into play. My neighbor keeps telling me it costs a buck a yard to move dirt. He might be right, but sometimes I think I'm doing it for less, other times, I know it's costing me more.

Good luck,
Eddie

Around here a lot of people with a problem with their pond just go ahead and put a pump on it and drain it. Then go in with a dozer and clean it out or dig it deeper etc then let it refill. That looks like it would probably be the cheaper way for him to fix it.

Moat is a good name.
Great point on the volume of dirt, thank you.
I was going to build up around the house (to be built) but with this volume we can build up all along the south bank. If we are able to put the septic system in front (south) of the house then we can extend the build up to the edge of our property. Updated the pond site to show the area. There are other areas on the property that could use extra soil.
Does the dollar per yard include the cost of equipment if you do the work yourself?

The moat is fairly shallow along the west half of the south bank. Maybe I could fill in a crossing there. I updated the site to show that.

I found a satellite view from 1997 and added it to the site. This photo seems to have a higher water level than I have ever seen. How much water do you think the bushes and tree are taking from the lake?
Gemini
The pump is a good point, thanks
There are 2 drain pipes on the east end of the pond. Up dated the site to label the pipes. I can drain most of the water using the pipes and then use a pump.

Summer and fall of 2007 was the driest most people can remember. I have some photos of the moat almost dry. Will try to find photos that relate to photos posted and add them to the site.

Eddie, congrats on reaching 200,000 hits to this post. I remember when it hit 100,000 and 1000 posted responses. I didn't think it would reach 200k though! That's a lot of folks reading your thread.

Gary,

Thank you. I just noticed it was over 200,000 views and was both shocked and proud.

Steph and I were down there this morning before first light, and as the sun was coming up, we watched the fog drifting off of the water. I realize that I'm biased, but it just keeps looking more beautiful to me!!! Looking back, it's almost surereal that I created it.

Thanks again to everyone here who helped with your suggestions, advice and answers to my questions. It would not have turned out as it did without you.

1$ a yard ?

That seems high.

I'd better not get curious and try to figure it out, or my wallet may start hurting!
