Gotta say that I thought I knew what you were saying, and I agreed the first time around, until I re-read it.

I thought you were saying, or intended to say, that the tension was adding to the bending load on the trailer bed. The reason I was thinking that is because I have seen that happen when I strapped down a utility tractor on my lowboy double-axle bumper pull. After tightening the chains, connected to the sides, I looked underneath to see the angle irons over the axle with a very visible bend in them.
Trailer axels have a camber.....if they are straight you should worry.

This is a local photo taken by someone I know. This is the South.
He's lucky he didn't have to roll that log up onto a band mill.

He also failed to hook up the sky hook, to take up any excess weight that the trailer was unable to handle!

Whoever loaded this monster log had to have some serious equipment to place it on the trailer. Surely the operator/loader knew better.

To answer the question of what went wrong: EVERYTHING!

Not sure I'd even put that on my 12k trailer!

The guy could take up a raffle of guessing the actual weight of the wood. Prize? (wood, trailer? <- hey, it's now famous!) That should probably pay for a new trailer, a trailer that he'd also likely look to find out what it's real capacity is!

All in the name of science...
