Crush and Run vs Recycled Asphalt?

/ Crush and Run vs Recycled Asphalt? #21
In these parts of lower SC, we have limestone crush n run and granite crush n run. Difference is you can walk on granite crush n run, but never, never on limestone crush n run. Also, limestone crush n run strays, after a while you have to be careful when you mow.

Also, if you've ever had a serious case of "crush n run rash," then you'll know why I'll never buy anymore limestone crush n run. It will leave lasting scars.

Thanks to all for the great info. One other thing that I forgot to ask from the experienced individuals, was there any bleeding from the recycled asphalt? My concerns are kids and pets tracking in tar. Thank again to all.

Have you thought about recycled concrete? That's what I plan on using when I eventually resurface our driveway. The guy I buy rock from charges the same for recycled asphalt and concrete. Also I hear the lime in the concrete may help keep weeds in check.

Three comments:

Our driveway is about 400 feet long. We took out 6" of dirt by using a tiller and scoop. Then laid down the matt and put in gravel.

We thought putting own the recycled asphalt would be just the ticket, but when we put down four loads of recycled asphalt two years ago, it became a total mess! Turns out that around here any recycled asphalt is used on the roads if it is clean. This had all sorts of dirt in it. Every time it rained or during the winter when the driveway was wet, we had the mud all over. Last spring we put two loads of crushed rock on top of it and have had not problems.

Someone mentioned that some states have machines that recycle road material. Our oldest son was in college with one of the Mannat boys. They are the firm in Iowa that has done all the research and development in recycling roadways. Turns out they save lots of money for the taxpayer and do the job in MUCH less time.

Why can't you walk on limestone?

That is all we have for gravel around here and have walked many a miles on limestone.

My bad, I would not make a good typist. I meant to say in my post that "you cannot walk barefooted on limestone crush n run."

We still go barefoot a lot in these parts.

I believe that either "crush and run" or "crush n run" are both terms mistaken for crusher run...the only reference (Google Search) I could find confirmed this.

Crushed stone: This is generally limestone or dolomite that has been crushed and graded by screens to certain size classes. It is widely used in concrete and as a surfacing for roads and driveways, sometimes with tar applied over it. Crushed stone may also be made from granite and other rocks. A special type of limestone crushed stone is dense grade aggregate, or DGA, also known as crusher run. This is a mixed grade of mostly small crushed stone in a matrix of crushed limestone powder.

I'd agree with you on your statement with one personal observation. Earlier this year I made the mistake of walking/running across a paved parking lot barefoot to get the truck and trailer for our Jetskis. I guess I am a 'tenderfoot' because I blistered both feet from the heat off of the black pavement.

Dargo,
That's not a tenderfoot..

A neighbor explained to me his wife's relative the tenderfoot...
He wears shoes or flipflops or something from bed to bed..
has pool shoes and house shoes.. Said he never saw him or ever heard of him going without shoes...

now that is a tenderfoot..
I'd call you a toasty!

No doubt that's true, "crusher run" is the formal name, based on your research. However, "crush and run" is not a mistaken name in these parts, it is the name. Sorta like a regional variation as in some of our foods: for example, depending on where you are, a "hoagie" can be a grinder, sub sandwich (or just plain sub), torpedo, or hero, just to name a few variations.

In these parts, nobody would know what you want if your ordered crusher run, or they might laugh at you and say "you not from around here are you?" It's even advertized as ''crush and run."

Nice to know the technical name tho, always good to pick up that kind of trivia.
