probably a very dumb question.... the main drive spindle... at the front of the engine is not turning.. its not jammed.. I can turn it by hand.. the belt tensioners engage ok.. but as the spindle is not turning the bed doesn't cut...

Maybe the crankshaft pulley key is sheared.

I've never done it but it looks like the hood, side panels, muffler and pto assembly needs to come off to get to it.
thx.. when I manually turn the spindle it does turn the drive shaft to the bed... so its definitely something to do with the connection to the crank... but i don't have a diagram.. and am loathe to start dismantling and finding i can't finish.... I'm not the greatest mechanic.. although I do have a 53 land rover.. and manage to keep that going..
