Cub Cadet voltage regulator adjustment

I’m having some charging issues with my old cub cadet model 86 with a 10hp Kohler. It wasn’t charging, with a meter hooked to the battery at full throttle it was outputting 12.5 v. I bought and replaced the voltage regulator, it is now charging at 16v! Is there an adjustment procedure I need to follow to get it charging around 14.5v?

No. Output is dependent on the regulator you have and level of charge.

I think those had a mechanical regulator, which can be adjusted by varying the gap on the points. that generator is also used as a starter, if that's an IH Cub Cadet, they were really well made machines!..BTW, 13.8V is much safer for the battery, less water is lost..

It is an International Cub Cadet, I think its about a 1974. I'm fixing it up for my daughter to "help out around the house" i.e. take the dog for a ride in a wagon. I found some information about adjusting the points gap, set it to .020" which unfortunately didn't help. Sending the regulator back to try another, hopefully the next one is good.

you might want to look here, good info on the regulator. Mechanical Voltage Regulators - Only Cub Cadets they did mention the 4 wire model senses a voltage drop when heavy loads are applied, and raises the voltage to compensate..
