cub cadet volunteer keeps stalling going into gear

so my son suprised me and got a 2014 volunteer with only 180 hrs- It starts fine but when you go to put it in gear it stalls- can not get it to run- took spark plug out and completley black- going to replace but any ideas- It has the kohler engine

Hi, you say it stalls after putting in gear? Does it grind the gears to engage? Sounds like the clutch isn't releasing if it is as putting it in gear at an idle does nothing until you give it rpm to drive away. But you say will not run? You can't start them in gear...

Release the Hand Brake.

There is a hand brake lockout switch. If you have already released the handbrake and it still does that I would check the continuity on the switch.

I'm not familiar with the gas models or the newer ones but other than the audible buzzer warning for the handbrake there's nothing stopping the engine by having it in gear with the handbrake applied. That would actually be a real pain from my experience but I'm not saying it might not be so, just questioning.
