Culvert Installation Basics

cj,
That's exactly what I was talking about .
It's HDPE drain pipe and many companies handle it.
The last time I bought any it wasn't that much more than "wrinkled tin".
It's good stuff, I think you'll be pleased.

Yep sounds like the stuff.

I just need it to dry up a little around here. The excavater is doing more than setting the pipe and the other area needs to be dry. Oh well in time it will be..

I bought some of that black culvert pipe from Lowes. They had 12" and 15" diameters and they come in 20' lengths which is a problem moving if you don't have a trailer. They also have the pieces to connect the pipe. I used it to widen my driveway. It works great. I have had a dump truck go accross it with 20 ton of stone and not affect it. I have another piece I am using for the wet weather stream on my property. The tractor is making a mess crossing through the stream. Now I just have to wait until it dries up a little. Good luck.

I wanted to add a driveway to my property along a State Highway. I went to the TXDOT office and asked what was required. The next day a guy came to my place, looked over the spot, told me I needed a 24 inch culvert of any material I wanted, that was 40 feet long with tapered ends.

That same week an add in the Thrifty Nickel listed a used 40 foot, 24 inch tinhorn for sale for $350. It looked good and I offerd $300 if he'd deliver it.

I had some concrete ends that the TXDOT guy said were fine just lying around that fit just right.

While installing everything, and about a month after getting the permit, a different TXDOT guy stops by and asks me what am I doing. I show him my permit. He said that guy retired and he's in charge now and my ends are illegal. No more concrete ends, too dangerous. I have to use metal ends.

Thats that, so I dig up the concrete ends that didn't cost a dime and buy metal ones with straps for $290.

The new TXDOT guy is happy and I have my driveway.

For now I just put some limestone of top until I'm ready to pave. I used red clay for fill.

Good Luck,

If you had a valid permit I believe I would have held my ground on the concrete ends.

I think Eddie did the right thing. You don't want to upset the good inspectors or it could be a long road getting the project approved. The permit is for the project but may have not listed what types of ends to use. That may have been a discretionary issue with that inspector. I have had building inspectors go through with a fine tooth comb looking for problems and others glance around and leave. Bottom line is don't make them mad or they can cause you a lot of grief.

Hi ,
I use to install culverts for the county and also onto state right of ways . My county or state inspector always required fill including finish material ( IE gravel ,concrete, asphalt )
over the pipe equal to half the diameter of the pipe .So a 18" diameter culvert would require 9'' of fill or gravel over the top to the finish grade . I believe the pipe manufacturer can also supply this information ,which is how the crush strenght of the culvert is determine in this area .If we could not get the culvert to the right elevation or sub grade to match the bottom of the existing drianage ditch than we used two smaller size culverts equal to the volume of the larger one required . WE could also place "Structual reinforce concrete" over the culvert if need be to bring it up to its structural crush strenght . if for some reason we could not use two smaller units . Here in our county ,they require a continuation of the street slope for two feet over the drain so a county snow plow won't rip it out the culvert or tear up there equipment as they go by plowing the road . They will send you the bill if they damage there equipment because a drain was installed wrong /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif ! If you "stone rip rap" the ends or use a concrete bulk head it makes for a very nice finished project.
Good Luck ,
Big Al

"I need to install a driveway culvert according to county specs. Specifications call for a 32' x 18" mitred, steel culvert. Pitch for drainage is not critical according to the building inspector.'

If y'all notice he is kind of limited in what he can do; however, I have used that double-walled pvc 20' pipe a couple of times. The best part is one man can haul it and install it alone. It is designed to snap together, end to end, so I had them cut it in half with a circular saw so it would fit in my minivan with the front passenger seat removed. Hauled it home, snapped it back together, threw it in my ditch, and covered it over, singlehandedly.

Since I live on a county road, I called the county and they told me the size culvert I needed. They also told me for $250, they would put it in for me, materials AND labor.

Several months later, when our builder started on our house, the first thing they did was put in a construction driveway. They tore out the culvert that I just had put in and replaced it with a new one. Even though our contract said, "culvert provided by owner", the builder said the county requires a 30 foot culvert, and we only had a 20 foot culvert. I told them that was funny, considering the county was the one who installed the 20 foot culvert in the first place! /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif I ended up winning that one, the first of many issues while building the house!
