It is true for the L2501DT

Well, I had a tractor with a transmission driven PTO 50 years ago. They are just barely OK at best. I can't think of any advantage to a transmisson driven PTO other than they are very simple and inexpensive. I find them to be a pain. And when you let the clutch out to start moving it takes a dozen feet in a midrange gear for the PTO to turn up to speed and start working the implement. My advice to anyone considering that feature is to try one first.

Shucks, talk about a retrograde feature..... Buying a tractor with a transmission-driven PTO is like returning to the days of unsprung axles and no front brakes! Wait a minute... what? You mean we're still there?

There's a thread here on the L2501DT (gear drive) pto clutch. A warning for those considering a Gear Drive Kubota L2501

My limited understanding is the gear drive L2501DT has a one stage type clutch for the PTO. That's why I asked earlier in the thread to be sure that I could leave the PTO running on the HST model even when switching between forward and reverse. With a compact size tractor, sometimes it's easier to back over tall briars with the cutter than run forward through them.

This would not be my primary mowing tractor. I have some confined areas where a compact tractor would be easier to navigate.

My transmission-driven PTO would basically only spin when it was in gear and the tires were moving. EXCEPT that if you didn't want to be moving at all - say using the tractor as the power source for a wood splitter or such - you could leave the tranny in neutral and then the PTO was worked by the clutch.

So what I would do to cut grass next to a building would be to carefully back up tothe building until the bush hog was just touching. Then I would shift into neutral, let out the clutch, rev the engine to full rated RPM and that would cut the grass there. Then I would push in the clutch, reduce throttle, let the bush hog idle down to a complete stop or disengage the PTO, engage whatever gear I planned to cut the next pass in, engage the PTO, let out the clutch while advancing the throttle, and the tractor would start to move forward cutting grass as we went. The cut was very poor because the cutter wasn't up to speed until we got up to speed in gear. Then it cut fine.

An independent PTO - as opposed to a transmission driven PTO - allows you to engage and clutch the PTO independently of the tractors motion. Sometimes it uses a 2 stage foot clutch and sometimes a special PTO clutch.

I have never mowed with our HST Kubota, so have no idea how it works when switching between forward and reverse.
Sounds like something to look into.

The 2501HST PTO is independent, works when engaged regardless of HST. It does have a clutch, but that basically allows you to spool up the PTO easily. Easy peasy!

Called the dealer for an update. Salesman hadn't heard of the equine discount. He said he'd look into it and give me a price estimate, but it would have to be an estimate because Kubota USA is telling them about a 5% price increase is coming in about a week. They also don't have the tractor. It would be on "allocation".

They do have the third function kit and the grapple in stock which was a shocker.

Sign up for your equine membership. It's free for the first year.

You will be sent a membership number within an hour. I had my card within a week.

Whether your salesman has heard about the discount is irrelevant since Kubota and NCHA are partnered for this 20% discount.

I would build the tractor you want on the Kubota website, print out the build sheet to bring to your dealer. The 20% should apply to the build sheet.

Salesman responded this afternoon with only the HST/loader but no grapple or 3rd function and no equine discount in spite of me clearly indicating to him what I wanted. I am not happy with this salesman. Told him I'd work with another salesman. Will see if the other guy from the same dealership follows through.

Meanwhile, have contacted another dealership recommended by drumminj.

Talk to the owner or general manager of the dealership and see what they say. I don't see how they can refuse a Kubota offered discount if you qualify (NCHA membership).
