CUT vs PT

Dear everyone,
Thanks for the replies. Charlie, I guess one question I have is regarding the rear discharge mower. How can a rear discharge rough cut mower not be more dangerous if you are behind it (compared to a CUT 3 point shredder that you are in front of and above of) /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif??? As far as dust, the only tractor mowing I've done was on and 8N with a brush hog in August and I wouldn't exactly call that "dust free."

FYI- I wouldn't describe the portion of my property going down to the creek as "steep." I would call it sloping with lots of terrestial irregularities /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif.

I realize there is no machine that will do everything the best. If a larger PT could mow this area "OK" and do everything else great, i like the PT. If the PT is really great for everyhing else but cannot handle this 10 acres, i really should probably consider a CUT???

I know, I know... I need to test drive a 1430 and a 1445 on my property, it is a little difficult to do that though /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif.

</font><font color="blue" class="small">( PT 6 foot rough cut mower.....<snip> It is rear discharge, and does not seem to throw sticks or rocks. It has three spindles, with hinged blades like a big brush hog, and with stump jumper hubs. )</font>

I suspect the three spindles are the secret. The smallish blades on those spindles would have a lot less interia compared to the monsters on my single spindle 6 footer. The bigger the blade, the bigger the rocks it can launch. I believe that 7 foot is about the maximum for single spindle cutters.

Of course one pays for more spindles. If $2500 is an accurate price for the 72 inch rough cut (assuming it is still available), then it is exactly five times more expensive than the Kodiak single spindle rotary I bought new last year.

Makes sense, but the idea of being behind the rear discharge still seems a little scary, my 3 blade 42" lawn tractor can throw some stuff pretty hard. I won't mow if my kids are outside anywhere.

How do i paste a qoute in a highlight color???
Thanks

Click on the Quote feature under Instant Markup, then paste the quote between the two sets of brackets that contain the words 'quote' and '/quote.'

Or you can click on a color under Font color and do something similar..

Ian,

If you try to edit a post with Instant Markup, it invariably messes it up (for me anyway). That looks like what happened to your practice post.

We're easily led astray from the topic at hand, aren't we? Well, at least it was your thread to hijack. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Charlie: <font color="red"> The front mower in dry conditions puts out some dust, so I wear a mask, but I've never had any projectile from the mower come near me </font>

Same here; same tractor, same mower, no projectiles. I don't really have an explanation except for the light blades. The blades are only 7-1/4 inches from the tip to the center of the pivot and I'm running blades made from the ends cut off generic lawnmower blades so they don't have much inertia. They will still cut saplings quite nicely though. Go figger.

<font color="red"> I can't help with the grading question. I'm no good at it. </font>

Pulling the box blade or landscape rake backwards using a mirror takes a bit of getting used to with the articulated tractor but then it becomes quite easy. Having the implement out front is much much easier on the neck. One of the first things I noticed when I started using the 1845 was how much much less fatigued I was after a few hours on it than after a few on the CUT.

Broke a steering cylinder hose today, my first,
