CUT vs Skid Steer

Xfaxman, I'm going to have to ask you to refrain from posting more pictures of your telehandler. It's giving me an extreme case of envy. :D
That isn't the V417 compact telehandler, it is my wife's Toolcat. :D

For those newbies that haven't seen it, here it is with the 7' brush hog. Don't drool on your keyboard.:)

I see it has a 3point hitch on the back. Does it have a PTO too? Disregard I just looked at another photo of it and saw it.

The biggest problem with a cut is not being able to see the bucket edge vs clear visibility on a skid steer. Fine grading is tough, but 3pt attachments can help with that. Just to be clear that I'm only comparing a skid steer to a hydrostatic cut as a gear drive or shuttle shift is not as comparable in my opinion. If dirt is what you deal with the most then get a skid steer. Bottom line it's all budget and usage. I'd have both if I could afford it, but I still want and would use a skid steer even though I have a cut..

The loader on a tractor is a bass awkwards impliment. In a real machine, you have the heavy engine in back for ballast & the weak complex expensive steering axle away from the heavy lifting. Exactly the opposite of how a tractor is setup.

My dad said the old Allis Chalmers were easy to reverse. He said he was involved in several conversions.
Here's one on youtube. Reversed WC Allis loader tractor - YouTube

Seen a few old tractors setup like that, only with a forklift mast on or instead of a 3pt. Definitely the right way to design a machine from an engineering point of view, rather than putting the loader on the front. Ballast/engine in the rear, weak axle in the rear, beefy axle under the load, etc. Generally skid steeres are setup that way too, at least they get the ballast right & eliminate the weak axle entirely.

If you need to dig & move dirt or only lift stuff, get a skid steere, as that is what they are designed for If you need to mow, plow, or the most flexible option for a pile of different stuff, get a tractor.

I was thinking about this and first there was a tractor, then there came the skid steer. If the skid steer can do everything a tractor can do why are they still making and selling so many tractors? Did most of the major brands, many of whom make skid steers, not realize the skid steer was invented?

Yes, I adapted this from the "If we came from apes, why are there still apes?" debate. :)

Skid steers get stuck easier and are usually way heavier. They also have limited movement compared to a backhoe and they don't have 3pt hitches.

However they are fantastic for loading dirt and gravel, have good hydraulic power/flow and run a lot of front mounted implements very well and have a great view and are easy to climb in and out of.

They arent made for plowing but are more purpose built. Tractors do more but usually less heavy duty when it comes to quick attach implements.

Tractors are the Swiss army knife of powered machinery. The SS is a specialty machine.

We had pocket knives, then they invented scalpels. So why do people still mostly use pocket knives... Because the original tool is more versatile & useful in more situations.

Are you a midget? I climbed in an out of a John Deere 250 mid range skid steer and it was a big pain. If I had size 7 shoes and was 5' tall maybe it would be easy. :D
