D@MN RUST BUCKET!

The more I look at this brand new (6 hrs.) BX 2230, and the more I think about what I just laid out for it, the more disgusted I get!

I am finding rust everywhere! And I keep it in the garage.
When I picked it up at the dealers I noticed the balls in the heim joints on the 3 point hitch were all rusty. I was told they all come in like that from Japan. I also pointed out that the top link had some nicks in it which were already rusty. (I realized later that was from where it clips into the holder.) I was given a can of touch up gray paint.

Now I discovered that the hydraulic drop speed control is all rusty just behind the knob under the seat. The underside of the cast left lift arm at the 3 point hitch is all rusty. The brace that the top link hooks too is starting to rust under the seat.

This is ridiculous! I HATE rust!!! Once it starts it never ends.

My 30 year old Cub Cadet that this was bought to replace doesn't have one lick of rust on it anywhere!

I bought a new tractor so I wouldn't have to be spending time working on it. Now I'm going to have to spend time attacking rust!

I have a BX2200 two years old and about 200+ hours. The balls in the three point hitch were rusty when I recieved the tractor. These are un-painted metal, so they will rust....a little grease and use will solve this "problem".

My top link also has rust everywhere there is a nick....once again that un-painted metal. Touch up paint will fix the "problem" until you chip the paint off and expose un-painted metal...then the rust returns.

I have not checked my hydraulic drop control knob...but I suspect if it's not painted or paint is missing I bet it's rusting.

I don't think your being realistic....and I don't believe the commet about the 30 year old Cub Cadet having "no rust anywhere"....unless it was plastic.

I had a Corvair like that once..... It leaked so much oil, that the dripping oil covered everything continuously, and 30 years later there was still no rust. I did get sited a few time when parking it on the street for leaving hazardous material behind and twice the police called the hazardous waste team out for a clean up. My show car doesn't leak, but it does have rust on the bare metal parts. Rust is one of life's smaller aggravations. If you don't eat an apple fast enough, even it will rust. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

When I was shoping for tractors I noticed on all of the used 2200`s 1800`s etc I had looked at the transaxle had paint missing off it it. Not that this really hurts anything, but the gray paint popping off made the unit look much more used than it really was..My old 2072 Cub has all of the black paint still on its transaxle...

I agree they should prep these units better before painting.

Was your BX sitting outside on the dealer's lot, exposed to the weather for an extended period of time before you purchased it ??? /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif..I see it all the time and in my opinion it can't be that good for the tractor. I was fortunate in that when I purchased my BX, it came right off of the truck to be prepped.

I can show you pictures of the Cub. The only place there is rust is under the top belt cover of the mower deck where moisture collects and lays, and of course the underside of the deck from grass, stones, dirt, whatever hitting it. And it isn't plastic.

It appears that Kubota is very haphazard with their paint. For instance that hydraulic control knob. When I turned it in the process of cleaning the rust off, half way around is painted and what was turned down when they painted it isn't. Also if I look at about any weld joint that is in a corner, I can find rust.

When I was looking to get my BX I looked at several at two different dealers. I can honestly say I didn't see anything like you describe. After 3 years of use my L3010's gray paint on the axles ect showed no chips. I believe yours is an unusual case.

The 3-point bearings will rust--period.

The top link where it slides into the clip will get scratched and will rust.

As to the other things, cast iron will rust and it will likely take several centuries for it to be a problem. Cosmetically--clean the areas and spray down with a rust preventative gray tractor paint.

You are not realistic--I am a maintenence freak---no one exceeds me in this area. I go nuts over scratches and use magnifying glasses to find them and touch them on my cars. If I say you are unrealistic--you probably are--both of my Kubotas have a touch of rust here or there, especially on those balls and the 3-point top link and on the lower arms where I drop implements on to them when hooking up scratching the paint. Periodically I clean such areas and repaint them--soon after I scratch them again and it starts again. So it goes. It is after all a tractor, not a show car.

Oh, for example, I bought expensive 3M Invisishield and installed it on the wear areas on my tractors, cars, motorcycel. I also use clear vinyl tape in the same manner to protect areas my feet kick when I got boots on. I put silicone between the fender and floorboards. I put silicone under the ROP to fender on the BX. I have made mylar gaskets to prevent disimilar metal corrosion. I keep both indoors. Both get washed after chemicals or fertilixer have been spread with them.
Just yesterday I went into freak out mode /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif over some funny splotches in the Tundra paint--dude--at some point--we all have to concede defeat--despite our best--over exuberent efforts to keep things new --they --do--eventually become used--just like us. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif J

Comes with tractor ownership. Do you wash it alot? That would of course promote some rusting. I just use an aircompressor hose to blow the chunks of dirt off my platform - no water...Just a thought.

Get used to it. Better yet, become an expert on rust prevention techniques and share them with these forum folks...

In one sense, rust is a protective coating...if it is tightly adhered rust. Call it brown paint.

A little rust preventative spray will help some of your concerns. Or do some touch up painting.

My suggestion to you is that you put one hundred hours on your tractor and you might forget a little about the rust....!!

Using a tractor is still more fun than lookin' at one....
