Good idea to replace that seal. That's grease behind it, isn't it?

Parts have been ordered. Another $50.00 including shipping. Looks like she'll still be down next weekend since the rear main seal said 5-7 days to ship.

Expensive seal!

Yes. A light coating of grease so the seal is not dry on startup.

That's just the kind of attention to detail that makes mechanical work an enjoyable pastime instead of a chore.
kudos,

Expensive seal!

Rear main was $25. New gasket for the housing was $7. Also needed a bolt for the clutch housing, but ordered an extra in case.. $14 for shipping from Messicks.

I always put on more than a light coat, call it a moderate coat. No reason other than I was taught that way. Not sure if correct but has worked for lots of seals over the years and none ever leaked.

You must really look closely when installing those seals. There is a special tool that makes the seal ride over the crankshaft lip.

One can CAREFULLY use a small screwdriver to make sure the seal has slid over the crank snout without folding it back over itself.

Kid of slip it in and work it all the way around the crank. That would have been a nasty leak there.

Looking good!

Not sure about your particular engine but at least some Kubota crank seals come with a sleeve installed in the seal. These will have a sleeve on the crank that needs to be removed and the seal/sleeve installed as a unit. This is typical of the larger engines but I'm not sure about yours. I did see that on a DIY video where a person replaced the rear crank seal on his approx 50 HP Bobcat with a seal/sleeve combination. All of my experience with engine development has been larger engines on which the crank sleeve is standard practice. The rear crank seal is very sensitive to any surface imperfection and a seal riding on metal will eventually mark the surface. Rear crank seals are zero leak so a fresh wear surface with a fresh seal is common practice. Google replacing rear crank seals and you will find some YouTube videos. The installation tool for the Kubota V3800 engine is about $164 but the person I saw replacing the seal and sleeve on his smaller engine made do with careful installation. Your seal should come with the instructions.

I have used them a lot in repairing boats, they were and are part of the service tools. I have also used shim stock and even a beer can.

Once I straightened out the folded over rib, I was able to work the old seal back on the crank. I am not worried about installing the new one. If you could see it, you would understand. If there is a problem with the rib folded over, it is easy to tell. I will just pay closer attention this time and take my time.

This time I won't have two other guys to distract me. Let's just say dad won't ever help me rebuild another engine. He tried rushing us too much. My uncle and I had to tell him to relax many times.
