The theory sounds logical, but I'm old enough to remember when there were almost no warning labels on anything, and the reality and the theory just don't match.

I have to agree with Bird on this one. First, I don't think warning labels help anyone. People who are cautious enough to read them probably don't need them and the people stupid enough to do the things they warn against aren't going to read them.

Plus, it seems that most idiots are virtually bullet proof. You put 3 people in a VW Beetle being driven by a drunk that drives it into bridge abuttment at 70 mph. There will be three instant fatalities and one that will stagger away without a scratch.

The problem with the "idiots self-culling themselves from the herd" idea is that many of these idiots leave some pretty clever benefactors behind who then convince a jury that Heartless Corporate America done them wrong and the world owes them a living.

The best quote I heard about this is "A jury is made of 12 consumers." The corporation or business is at a severe disadvantage as a result.

We'll have plenty of fodder for Wacky Labels and Warnings until the political environment is right for some effective and sweeping tort reform.
