Then I would suspect you have automatic headlights -- so your head/tail lights ARE coming on when it is getting dark.

Yes, the Impalas have auto lights.

DRL's are likely a good thing overall. As someone else mentioned, they likely prevent accidents in the way that the third brakelight does.

On a little different subject, who turns on their "hazard" lights in the rain? That's not what they're for...not even close. If you have all red tail lights, and I'm behind you, I get to spend eternity trying to decide whether your applying the brakes or not. If it's raining so hard that you feel the need to turn on the hazard lights. pull over to the side of the road.

Whew, that feels better

DRL's are OK, but what bugs me is the increasing number of drivers who use their fog/driving lights all the time. Some factory-installed F/D lights are pretty bad, but the worst ones are the Ricky Racer Specials the kids get and mis-aim..............chim

I may have to read the owner's manual. Darn. I've never done that with anything!

I agree 100%. Hazard lights are for hazards. If they are on and you are moving then you must be the hazard so get off the road!!!

Well, I certainly wouldn't turn mine on just because it's raining, but if hit with a sudden heavy enough downpour that it becomes necessary to reduce speed a great deal below the speed limit and/or the speed of other vehicles, yes, I would. If that's not what they're for, would you explain to me what they are for? Below is the applicable section of the law in the State of Texas; may be different in your state.

( § 547.331. Hazard Lamps Permitted

(a) A vehicle may be equipped with lamps to warn other vehicle operators of a vehicular traffic hazard that requires unusual care in approaching, overtaking, or passing.

(b) The lamps shall be:

(1) mounted at the same level and spaced as widely apart as practicable on the front and on the rear of the vehicle; and

(2) visible at a distance of at least 500 feet in normal sunlight.

(c) The lamps shall display simultaneously flashing lights that emit:

(1) a white or amber light, or a color between white and amber, if the lamp is mounted on the front of the vehicle; or

(2) a red or amber light, or a color between red and amber, if the lamp is mounted on the rear of the vehicle.

Acts 1995, 74th Leg., ch. 165, § 1, eff. Sept. 1, 1995.

Working for an insurance company our company owned cars have had day running lights for well over 10 years. The one thing I have to remember is to turn on the parking lights when it rains since the rear lights are not on. I would not want someone to rear end me because they could not see me. In NJ it is law to have the headlights on when it rains, BUT it says nothing about the rear lights. Does anyone’s state law require both, front and rear, to be on when it rains?

I think they are a good idea. I got used to people flashing their lights to tell me my lights are on when they first came out and were not as popular as they are now

This past summer, I was driving toward Pittsburgh PA on I-84 when suddenly, a huge rain storm started. I had been listening to the weather band on my car radio and had been expecting it, but it happened suddenly. I was left with no choice but to activate the four way flashers and slow from 65 MPH to about 25 MPH since the wipers couldn't keep the windshield clear. At that point, I was moving over to the shoulder, but feared getting rear ended since the shoulder was only a car width wide with a guard rail along the right edge of the road. This is when a 18 wheeler, passed me on in the left lane. I pulled over to the side of the road to wait out the storm, and when it stopped a couple of minutes later, I saw where the tractor trailer had disappeared to...... it was kissing the ledge between the East & West bound roadway and was jackknifed in the ravine.. That could have been me sandwiched between the tractor cab and the rock ledge, if I hadn't put the flashers on and he hadn't gone around my car. All that I could think about was how lucky that I was mentally prepared for the situation.

"What I wish for on my Silverado ('99) is a way to turn the lights off after dark and the truck is already running. i.e. stop at the store and one of us is going to run in while the other stays with the kids in the truck with it running"

I just tried Dave (Gatorboy) Hoffman's idea here with my truck (96 Tahoe) running and it worked fine. I set the park brake with the truck running and no running lights. When I released the park brake I had running lights again. I never even knew about it until Dave told me here. I'll have to keep that problem on the 99's in mind. Now that I know about being able to kill the running lights, I'd hate to lose that option. /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif
