Dead Deer Exposed

Is it not illegal to ride around w/ your dead deer hanging off your truck or 4 wheeler? I believe it is here in La. I believe the deer needs to be covered/concealed or cleaned in an ice chest. The reason I ask is b/c I saw, on 2 occassions, hunters driving around with the dead deer dangling off a 4 wheeler in the back of their truck. This started a discussion of legality w/ my wife and I. It did not really bother me, just wanted to know if it is indeed illegal. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

I'm more curious about why you would think that such a thing should or shouldn't be legal in the first place?

I would never even imaging that a dead animal showing in public would be regulated by law, other than the license necessary to kill the animal in the first place (if its a game animal). It doesn't seem like anyone else business to me.

And fortunately.. in this day and age, it still isn't illegal to flaunt the fact that I or anyone else eats meat in front of animal rights activists.

That brings to mind some EXTREMELY funny "thumbing your nose at the authorities" type of situations... like making a FAKE dead bloody deer and riding around through town with it in the back of your truck with the tailgate down. Oh.. good time for a hilarious story that is semi-related.

I once worked with a great fellow. Nice chap to know and be friends with. It just so happened that he was Laotian and as you know their culture is quite a bit different than ours.

He drove a ratty old white 2 wheel drive Chevy S-10 pickup and came pulling into work one morning and his truck looked like a movie prop for a horror film slash fest.

Him and his brothers had gone to some place buy a live pig that they were going to cook for some Laotian special occasion. They were late going to get the pig and were pushed for time. His brothers rode in the back of the pickup down the Interstate as they slaughtered the pig at 65MPH on their way back home.

I can just imagine the horrified motorists... especially if they couldn't see exactly what was being slaughtered. I bet there were many cell phone calls to 911 as they went down the interstate. Evidently they made it home before any authorities zeroed in on their location.

Robbing a bank or inciting public panic are the crimes... the fake gun is only indirectly linked and technically has nothing to do with it.

The reason I ask is when I actually had time to hunt, I was told (warned) the animal needs to be concealed. I am a meat eater, deer eater, love wild hog and so on. It was just a discussion we were trying to find a resolution on. I guess I'll ask the authorities for the facts. Maybe call wildlife and fisheries. It was something I was told a couple years ago that resurfaced this weekend after seeing the dead deer.

I butcher deer, and cows and pigs, but I can't see any humor in this story, or incident. Sick humor if any, but just my opinion. In my state, the fact of riding in the back of a pickup would be the crime, doubt that the 'demonstration' of butchering would turn any heads other than the thought "stupid" comes to mind. Different folks, different strokes...... /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Also, in our state, when transporting a deer, by law, some part of the animal has to be exposed, and the deer cannot be concealed. Also, no skinning or butchering until after the deer is registered close to the area it was killed, and within a certain time limit. The deer hunting regs are very complicated and detailed, to the point that many illegals and non-citizens can get a license to hunt, but have no idea what the regs are that they should follow. So they don't. Time for requiring a qualified guide to hunt, IMO.

I'm just curious as to why some of the animal has to be exposed? Is it for identification purposes?

Primarily is law if the deer has not been registered yet.
As I understand, it is so the deer can be 'seen' by a game warden. I think it goes back a long way (been that way since the 50's) and probably had to do with hiding deer when too many were shot, being illegal. But, I long have thought it would be nice to be able to skin and pack (ice down) deer while still in camp, and not have to wait until one drove to a registration station. But old laws don't disappear easily. More new ones appear easily all the time however.
