Sorry, what a terrible story. Bothers me more then stories of harm coming to people. Surprised you didn't hear anything.

If the farmers wife had not been home and interrupted the "training", it could have gone on for hours and while 4 coyotes surely will not kill 100+ sheep in 1 go (nor was that the case with the dogs), the tally could certainly have been worse than 1 dead on site and 2 more the following day. We know this because a couple of years ago the coyotes on this same farm racked up well over 100 sheep/lambs killed in a 12 month period.

Surely NOT to get into a urinary flow contest with you westclif.........In your statement you even say they kill one animal at a time; and wound others as part of their killing technique.......If you look at what is said, I merely am stating that coyotes don't go through herd killing randomly and thouroughly as a pack of dogs do.........It's as simple as that......

I had the same thing happen a few years ago. Three dogs got into the pasture and killed all of my goats. The dogs were pets, they belonged to neighbors who let them run loose, they got together and formed a pack and mayhem ensued.

From the description it sounds like dogs, killing for sport and not food.

I don't have much patience for dog owners who let their dogs run wild. Around here we have an agreement with the sheriff that we shoot dogs that are caught on our property chasing livestock and give him the dog collar. He then visits the negligent owners and returns the collar and gives them a good talking-to. Seems to be working, it has been a number of years since we had an incident.

I have a neighbor who in the past 10 yrs had had over 10 different dogs .. Never takes care to keep them controlled of fed ... They each have roamed free will to do as they wish ... One disappears and a new pup shows up .. Time after time.

In a perfect World we could SSS the idiot neglectful owners and re-home the dogs.

This is one of my biggest and ongoing gripes - if you're not going to properly care for an animal DON'T HAVE ONE. And ditto X 100 for children. In both cases it's the animal or child getting the short end of the stick, which rarely turns out well.

Mine as well.

What I cannot understand is people who were raised in a good loving home that turn out to be such pos parent / doggy parent themselves.

If you choose donkeys as guard animal, I would not use a jack. I have had jacks kill goats! Just my experience! Sorry for your loss!

Not just jacks. I've got a jenny that after she had a colt she didn't like goats any longer. Before that, she was gentle as could be with them. I guess donkeys have personalities too.

She was being protective of her foal. Yes, they do have personalities and instincts.

If you are going to use a donkey as a guard animal, get a young jenny that has never been bred and keep her that way. Once bred they do change.

The good thing about having a donkey as a guard animal is that they eat the same things the goats do. Give them a little sweet feed, once in a while, as a reward and they will do the job. We have been using donkeys for nearly 15 years.
