I heard on the news a few day ago, Americans, for the first time in many years, are saving more than they are spending.

I heard this too... and the reporter went on to editorialize that "Americans now Saving" are part of the problem and will delay hopes of early economic recovery.

How many stories have you heard of the years that Americans don't save enough?

there is always a crisis for them to report on somewhere.

Yeah, typical media. When the price of gas was thru the roof, a local TV station was going to gas stations, and asking anyone in a truck if they have considered a more fuel efficient vehicle.
Most replied, NO!! They are lucky they did not ask me, because I would fire the same question back at them, among other things.

I agree, the sooner they stop reporting the gloom and doom, the sooner it will start to "turn around." My neighbor is looking for a tractor and has some cash to spend. I've been keeping my eyes open for him but they aren't showing up in this area like we thought they would. He's way too cheap to buy new - not a bad thing. If anything, I'd say I've seen less tractors in the last few weeks than normal:confused: Hopefully when Obama gets sworn in it will kick the confidence in the butt and bring us through it all.

land is really out of control. We've been seeing farm land at 12-15,000 per acre for awhile. You see many more people renting land rather than buying.

I guess I'm about a 100 miles southwest of Messick's. Our land values have taken a really big dive. Eighteen months ago we were at 10-12,000 per acre. We are back to 3-5000 per acre -- when people are willing to sell or auction for that price.

I'm 62. These are the scariest economic times of my life. I'm worried for my local tractor dealer. They are a very big part of our community.

I really worry about our local farm dealers, car dealers, and small businesses. I've never had so many friends out of work.

Firewood is even down to $60-80 for a full cord -- delivered and stacked.

I just don't understand how anyone can justify paying that kind of price for land unless they can turn it into commercial property and resell it. There's nothing a farmer can grow that can even come close to paying the interest on the loan at 3-5000 dollars per acre, much less 10-12000. Those kind of prices are totally out of control. I'm from Mississippi and the last land I bought, 76 acres next to my house, I paid $750 an acre for which was a fair price but not a steal. Timber is the main use for land around here but there are a lot of folks buying up land for hunting property. You see a lot of land without marketable timber on the market for $1500 an acre targeted at the wealthy hunters from the city, but it rarely sells at that price. Every now and then you'll see where some doctor paid that for cutover hunting land but most aren't dumb enough to overpay like that for land.
