Jim, recently purchased a Rigid table saw from Home Depot. Very solid, has castors for easy movement. Very happy with it. Just FYI, if you're still looking.

That was one of my stops for tomorrow. I've been told to get an inductive motor with the belt drive and at least 1.5 hp. Looks like I will be spending some money for this one. This saw will be a contractor type and last a lifetime for the homeowner.

The key to a good table saw is it's fence. You can survive with low HP, but you've got to gave an accurate, repeatable solid rip fence. Also check for shimmy in the miter guage slot. This can be fixed, but it's annoying.

A pro quality rip fence is about $300. A good one, maybe a hundred. Given two table saws, I'd always go for the one with the fence that was good enough that I didn't have to replace it with an aftermarket one in a few months.

Jim,

It's the Rigid TS3650 cast iron table saw. It is 10", 1 1/2 HP, and has the belt drive. Cliff is right about getting a good rip fence and miter slots. As I said, very happy with the solid feel of both on this saw. I'm not sure it's contractor's grade, though, as it was only around $450 for the saw, stand, and castor system.

Muhammad:

As usuall I was a little slow on the up take yesterday. The drill press is the minor cost. Now come the items to make it work. Plethora of attachments and you will allways need one more. Get ready to expand the shop and attachment area.

If you can attach a foot operated switch life gets easier.

Shopping is fun

My Delta Rockwell drill press is about, plus or minus a couple of months, twenty nine years old. It's on it's second Jacobs chuck, not bad for a busy but boring life. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Ditto on the table saw fences. I have an old cast iron Craftsman saw with a great aftermarket fence.

And yes, tools are an addiction. I'm an addict. I used to try to do better. Now I've just learned to accept my diseaese and appreciate it.

If you are looking at table saws don't overlook the Ryobi BT3100 at Home Depot. Sells for around $300.00 and you won't need to buy an after market fence or miter gauge.

I bought the original BT3000 back when they first came out at about $600.00. The 3100 is a better saw for half the price.

Edit: Here is a site to do a little reading.. BT3100

Look at the Jet contractor saw as well, they are very well biult, but they may be a bit more expensive. They now make one with a sliding table, very nice.

Hey Egon, do you recon those fellers with the show room shops actually build anything. Looks kind of like my shop. I worked on my shop for over a month, cleaning, building cabinets and sorting hardware. At least I don't have to go outside to turn around now.

The Rigid saw is now on sale at HD for $547.00. It is a very nice saw. I like the $1000.00 unit Sears has. But it is not mobile. The Ryobi is nice, but, I do not like plastic saws. The Delta saw at Lowes 36-650 was very nice for the money. I noticed that the display model's fence was broken on the end where it clamps. Thin metal for sure that couldn't stand the everyday pressure of shoppers. Still looking.
