I've worked in an office job for 28 yrs, and we always say a clean desk is a sign of a sick mind. I suppose the same holds true for workshops. But I am here to tell you, that they can co-exsist. My wife's uncle had a garage / workshop that was cleaner than most houses I've been in....and I am sure his productivity was much better than mine. I think most of us are just too lazy...as we would rather marvel at the beauty of our latest masterpiece as to do something mundane like sweep up some sawdust. And who knows when you are going to need that little piece of scrap wood like the ones in Egon's picture? Of course there are those of us where the workshop IS the point. Who cares if anything gets made there, but man what a great workshop.

good luck you wood butchers.

I've always admired neatness. But from a distance. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

If people judge the final product by the neatness of the work area they'd underestimate me every time.

( The Rigid saw is now on sale at HD for $547.00. It is a very nice saw. I like the $1000.00 unit Sears has. But it is not mobile. The Ryobi is nice, but, I do not like plastic saws. The Delta saw at Lowes 36-650 was very nice for the money. I noticed that the display model's fence was broken on the end where it clamps. Thin metal for sure that couldn't stand the everyday pressure of shoppers. Still looking. )

"Plastic" Whear on earth did you get that from? Completly wrong.

Yeah, now that you mention it, I must have paid around that for the saw. The $450 figure (including some other things) was what I told the wife. /forums/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I should have said the other brand cheaper saws are plastic based. The Ryobi is in fact all metal. At least the one I saw at Lowes was.

Went today and they had a table saw - Shopmaster TS350 - which is their top of the line homeowner grade saw. Marked down from 399 to 250. It has a 1 hp induction motor, but I don't know if it's belt driven. Special feature is 2 cast iron extension wings, whatever those are. See it here at this site

Is this a good saw? I don't know dip about table saws as I've never had one. But I plan to build a shop/garage in the next year and I'm prepping for that. Would this saw be a good choice for someone who doesn't plan to do woodworking and only needs to cut lumber and plywood to build stuff. Do I even need a table saw? So many questions, I really need to start a new thread, but once again, is this a good saw for me?

There are many ways to accomplish what you want to do. For basic building a table saw is not needed, but a good chop saw and circular saw are.

My preference is for a worm drive circular saw, for example a skill mag 77, and a good sliding chop saw like a bosch or dewalt, I like the bosch. I have looked at the ridgid sliding chop and it looks like a good saw, but I have no experiance with it.

With a good straight edge and sharp blades this combination will be the most flexable.

I do have a table saw as well. I use it all the time, but not for building, more for furniture or high quality work.

Buy good tools they will pay for themselves.

I do not have a warm fuzzy about Ryobi, but that is only my opinion.

No matter how you go get good support, a fw saw horses etc.

Good luck, have fun,stay safe.

That sounds like some good advice, Higgy. I looked at the chop saws while I was there and didn't really like the Delta's that were on sale although I'm sure they were just fine. The only "sliding" chop saw in the store was a DeWalt for $600.

Like you, I believe in buying good tools. The cordless Porter Cable drill/saw kit I bought over four years ago has outlasted the Sears kits my coworker's bought.

Anyway, back to the sliding chop saw. Sounds good to me. I'm going to check out some of the better ones around town. If someone has a specific recommendation, I'm all ears.

Look at the bosch, it is expensive but it has it all.

I have used the dewalt, it is a good machine, I just am not all that fond of dewalt, my personal bias. The delta is to small and I do not like the feel, once again that is just me.

The makita LS 1212 is a nice saw as is the LS 1211.

Hitachi makes a good one as well.

THe one that I just love is the Bosch 4412 which can be bought on line for about 540.00 reconditiond or 600 new.

I love worm drive saws, once again there are many manufactures. I have had and loved for many years a millwork worm drive, after 20 years it was stolen, and I replaced it with a skil mag 77. This is a magnesium saw, lighter than the venerable skil 77. It now has 5 years on the saw and is working great. The cost is around 180.00 on amazon.

I highly recommend these tools.

Oh yes, on the chop saw which is a sliding compound miter saw by its real name, I recommend that you spend the money and get a 12" saw not a 10" as the 12 will cut a 4X4 in one cut where a 10 will not.
