Death and social media ettiquette

Never been on Facebook or similar...

Know several otherwise good employees that got canned from a Facebook post.

One posted a selfie of her at work and she was clocked out on her mandatory 10 minute break... it was innocent BUT her screen was up behind her and about a week later it had made it to HR and she was terminated... otherwise nothing in her file and she started as a temp and did such a good job they made her permanent...

Her post was celebrating her becoming permanent.

Rather harsh. I guess that company likes getting sued for unlawful termination. Unless there was something very damaging to the company or proprietary on the screen, I cant see that termination holding water in a court case.
BTY: I don't have a Facebook account but the wife does and all my kids do and I constantly remind them about putting too much personal stuff on there. As a matter of fact, this is the only website that I frequent other than news channel and my personal email.
I probably put too much personal info on this website also.

I know that some companies have rather Draconian rules about use of social media during work hours. My son worked for a company that did not allow ANY use of ANY social media facilities during work hours. How they controlled this situation would have been a big ???.

Cat Fever - I passed 50 so long ago, its not even a memory any more.

Sig Arms - hey, I still send Christmas letters to all family. Actually, we exchange Christmas letters, its become a family tradition. I even use Santa, reindeer, elves stationary.

1 - If you read Ultrarunners response as to why she was terminated, I see no reason why it wouldn't hold up in a court of law.
2 - We had a truck driver decide to post a pic of him on the road driving DURING working hours on Facebook. Needless to say, he's no longer with us.
3 - If you have a smart phone, as long as you're careful about the info you put out there on social media, I have no doubt that the government already has everything they need to know about you per info (yes, tin foil hat on).
4 - The reality is good companies do monitor social media. Makes complete sense if you're the employer.

With todays internet age, even a private citizen can find out a lot about someone they don't know by doing some online research.

It was a reportable HIPAA violation and a big deal when you are a Hospital and patient information is put out on the Internet.

I hate to say this, but it seems if you want to keep up with your extended family, you almost have to do Facebook just to know what's going on with the family.

Pretty much... the irony is when Facebook first came out I mentioned I wanted to sign up and the family said why would you want to put out private information on the net... so I didn't.

To a last one, they are all heavy Facebook users... the days of getting a e-mail vacation picture have long passed... one of my jobs was to show Mom the pictures of the Grand kids via e-mails received... never happens anymore.

I've had the same phone number almost 40 years and the same e-mail address 20 years... and live on the same road... not the same house for 50 years and yet I am the hard one to get a hold of since I don't own a smart phone or do social media?

Sometimes I think of myself kind of a Leroy Jethro Gibbs when it comes to technology at home... at work I am the backup IT person the one that takes care of the phones, medical devices, etc... on my own time my new car is 18 years old, I have a Zenith TV with rabbit ears, no cable and appliances dating from the 60's and 70's... oh... and the last person to carry a standard work pager which worked everywhere... not like cell which has lots of dead zones even today with home being one.

IMO it comes down to one big issue, laziness. It's easier to write a post for the world to read than take the time and deal with people one on one. That's why I find the term "Friend" so ironic on Facebook. Should just use the term "acquaintance".

I don't do any of the social media stuff. I still have a flip phone. Our kids text me......I respond....."call me"........I think social media is an excuse for people not to talk to each other.......I know it saves time.....but I don't like it.

Agreed. Same here... no social media, twitter, etc. We don't even have a web page for our business, my clients talk to me. I do have an amazing smart phone, my office is now where I am. It not only gives me the freedom to take my office with me, but makes me a butt load of money because I use it as a business tool. As for the rest, if you can't take the time to talk to me... I don't have the time for you.

I have distant family members that have disappeared. They are in my grand parents generation and most likely they are dead but we don't know. We can't find relatives that would know either, most likely they are dead as well, though it s possible some got remarried and changed names but kinda unlikely.

The good thing about today's social media is that it will be possible to find distant relatives that have gone missing.

Later,
Dan
