Death and social media ettiquette

My High School niece and her friends were in a dance recital Sunday... the kids did a really good job and after a group of 10 of us went to dinner... 6 teens and 4 adults... the teens spent a lot of time on their smart phones but not all the time... maybe 50/50

What I thought was odd is they would text each other across the table... maybe silence is golden?

I love texting for work, particularly if I'm stuck in meetings, as if something is important, you can communicate without interrupting people around you.

That said, general rule, if something requires more than 3 texts to the same person in the same "conversation", call instead of texting LOL

I do have customers who like to both e-mail and text info to me, sometimes on the same subject, which I honestly find hard to keep track of.

You need to get acquainted with the definition of "social media".

This is not social media. It's a forum. Like chat rooms (which are not forums), they have been around since the dawn of the Internet, long before social media was invented.
You are correct that forums predate the term social media but they are.

Definition of*social media

:forms of electronic communication (such as websites for social networking and microblogging) through which users create online communities to share information, ideas, personal messages, and other content (such as videos)

Texting has worked well for us at the Optimist Park. Coaches are informed of game postponements due to inclement weather. Coaches then text the parents. Works well. Works well for work also.

So much basically equal power in every ones pocket. The hayday of CB radio was much more interesting and entertaining. Who ever had the biggest amplifier (boot) and antenna was KING! Until someone stuck pins in their coax or tore their tower down completely.

We lost our son in a motorcycle accident. He was active duty Army and Westboro Baptist were planning on protesting at his funeral. Imagine my surprise when I saw it announced on the local TV station, complete with picture! It was public information with the newspaper published obituary, but I would have thought the TV station would have done some asking of family before running something like that. I just let the issue go, it wasn't worth expending any energy on it. It did make me reconsider what I would publish in an obituary though.

My condolences Doug. Westboro Baptist church is a terrible organization, but it makes me more patriotic and proud to be a veteran. You stood tall with the TV station.

Let me tell a story that happened a few months ago. My mother-in-law died and her funeral procession was a good distance ending in Cambridge, MA. On the way (I was in the lead car just behind the limo), as we passed a construction site the police rendered a hand salute, and the workers stood at attention with their helmets over their hearts. They did not know her from anybody, but they paid respects to her. God Bless America.

Nice story. Hard to believe in an age where I see men in restaurants wearing their ball caps.

Merriam-Webster is nothing more than a mirror of ignorance. They bought into deconstructionism very early, and now can't be relied on to define water.

In short, Merriam-Webster is wrong. Forums are not social media.

Find 2 sources that state otherwise. We can find several sources that say the same thing as Webster.

That sounds like a truly gut-wrenching situation. I am very sorry for you and your family.

The Westboro Baptist people make me hope they are right about the existence of **** so they can go there.

Nice story. Hard to believe in an age where I see men in restaurants wearing their ball caps.

I was raised to take off your head cover at the table to eat. Same for going onto the dance floor of a evening. Often times a hat rack was near the door or register. Sure as heck not doing it now a days. Hat will likely be gone when your done. Setting it on a empty chair at the table just gets it set on or the newly arrived occupant of the chair just toss the hat on the dirty floor or on the table top to get soiled. Hats stay on my head do to the bad manners of those around me. Many type of social etiquette has changed or gone. Not just online or newspaper.
