Deere 110TLB Engine Problem

A good battery will show around 13 volts with the engine off. This is no guarantee it would pass a load test. Get a load tester, they aren’t that much, less than $50. I bought one a few years ago and should have bought one years ago. It will take most of the doubt the battery is the problem.

Tractor seem to work fine for about five hours - then conked out today during heavy load. Attempt to restart revealed a battery that would not turn over the engine (84% charge).

Could this be a bad alternator that has made the electrical supply inadequate at times, and what looked like a bad fuel filter was actually the fuel pump not getting enough juice?

Thanks

Norman
The short answer is yes.

Without a multimeter and general mechanical and troubleshooting knowledge you are fighting and uphill battle.

I think I remember from previous conversations that you have the PDF service manual for your tractor. At this point you should probably start at page 50 for the Starting Motor Troubleshooting Guide.

Also from the previous issue: Did you pull the fuel line at the tank and verify good fuel flow?

UPDATE

Recharged the battery.

Lights and fuel pump turn on but no clicking from starter motor when ignition turned. Hour meter on panel is also out.

12.8V on the multimeter and no change at all when the ignition switch is turned.

Tried to jump with car – no response.

Any thoughts?

Thanks

Norman

Safety circuits? No solenoid pull could be the safeties.. Neutral, seat safety, PTO safety if it has one.. etc...

A no crank condition is different from no start..

Could also be a bad relay. Get the wiring diagram out and check each condition to get the solenoid to pull in.

That voltage in your battery sounds low to me but i doubt that’s the problem. I’m betting some other kind of electrical problem bearthebruce covered the most obvious ones in his above post.

It seems like this needs to be an electrical problem that first caused the tractor to lose power and conk-out, then prevents power form being send to the solenoid...

12.8 is kinda low on battery. You need to test voltage while trying to start it. A starter draws a huge load from battery. Mine shows 13.1 volts. Mine drops to about 12.7 during start.

12.6 is the normal resting voltage for a standard 12v automotive style battery, with no change for start position I would be looking into the control side such as safety switches, fuses and relays.

Sure you didn't accidentally pull the PTO switch up?

I’m wondering if I can some initial thoughts on what might be wrong with our Deere 110TLB engine.

Engine has about 1500 hrs. on it - it has always sounded terrible but never had a performance problem. I was going up a steep hill when it suddenly lost power and it conked out. When I tried to restart the engine, it just cranked over, put out a lot of black smoke and wouldn’t start. This engine always starts immediately and only puts out a little bit of smoke.

Temperatures were both fine when this happened. I checked the oil and hydraulic and they’re both fine as well.

Left it for a while. When I came back it was a bit difficult to start but did eventually turn over. Initial idle was lower than normal and there was an initial black smoke which cleared when I raised the RPM’s. Engine will go up to its full RPM and power.

Now, each time I try to start the tractor it is a little bit more difficult than normal to start, has that period of initial black smoke, and idle is too low. But when the throttle is raised it appears to be running normally.

Anyone have any thoughts?

Thanks in advance for any help.
Black smoke indicates unburned fuel. Check the air filter and intake system for a restriction. That doesn't explain why it clears up however. Could be both a clogged air filter /intake and restricted fuel flow.
