My 4310 ehydro manual shows a relief valve set at 1500psi that can bypass the power steering valve.

while it shows a relief valve on the diagram, it must be internal inside the SCU. It says the SCU is not serviceable. It seems I sourced them at one time 6 or so years ago. I'm trying to see if I saved a link.

I did that and i pass both with flying colors... In fact my wheel don't turn much at all during the 8LB steering test as in like maybe 1/2 turn

something somewhere is inhibiting flow.

One more thing, Deere makes a "light" version of hydraulic oil for these things and my salesman recommended it, even down here in our hot temps.

I gotta think your freezing temps are possibly part of the problem. I see that heater in your garage and I want to stand in front of it and do nothing. :)

Did you notice a name or any numbers on the side of the SCU?

quadmaster,
Most SCU's are a real PITA to take apart and reassemble with out detailed instructions. Most common USA manufacturer of sterring units would be Sauer Danfoss & Eaton. Foreign versions I don't have a clue.

Possible there could be some internal "Make up oil" check valve(s) on the steering unit that have failed or stuck partially open. These checks are for turning when the engine is off.

Hello guys, Names michael.

After owning a deere 4100 HST for 5 years and zero issues i decided to upgrade to the 4300 HST.... I love the older compacts....

I bought the 4300 about two weeks ago from a really cool guy that sells compacts on the side.. I noticed it was hard to steer as soon as i fired it and it is HARD near impossible to turn at a idle.. Bumping throttle to 1500-1800 RPM allows for what in my mind is more normal... pushing it to 2200+ id say is good....

Its been fully serviced by the guy, all new filters and fluid..
He knocked off a few hundred bucks for me to buy a good used pump as we both agreed it wasn't normal. I got a good used pump on it from a tractor wrecker. I put it on to night and there is ZERO difference.. I about cried..

I called john deere and followed there instruction on simple checks.. seeing if it would turn with engine off means the steering motor is good and isn't leaking. Holding the steering wheel all the way to the left or the right and holding it with engine running at full speed with 8lbs of torque on the steering will nut will tell you if he front ram seals are good.

Im at a loss...... I see 5-6 people on this forum has had the same issues though hours of searching and they always say they will report back with problem and never do.
Im in this for the haul.

This is a shot in the dark but I guess worth mentioning. I had a problem with my grand marquis...well I found out that the steering shaft had a universal joint that was seizing up....

The hydraulics on these units are made by Hema (Turkey). Just cuz Deere says the steering valve and
the steering cyl are not rebuildable does not mean they can not be fixed. I would test the hyd cyl for
internal leak first.
