Design-your-own 3rd Function

aeblank ,

Have you decided on the type valve, solenoid or lever type?

If lever valve, you need a valve with PB and ports to match hoses/flow.

If 3rd function, you probably need about a 10 GAL solenoid valve and a DO3 subplate.

All DO3 ports are high pressure, and the valve will provide full flow.

What is the purpose of the valve?

You might consider this lever valve.

I was really just looking for information (not installing anything now).
When/if the time does come, I feel as though I mostly understand the hydraulic system, as it applies to 3rd function valves.
I've just seen several mentions of people doing it themselves, and wondered what all was involved.
Didn't ever expect it to go to three pages, but thanks all for the info.

I really did think you were ready to install.

With all the data you have received, you should be able to plan, round up the parts, and do it yourself for much less than you thought.

If this valve is primarily for the grapple, my recommendation would be for the diverter valve, which would be located up front, and you still have feather, and a simple thumb switch for grapple operation.

You can get that valve for around $100 from Baileynet.com

I could swear I gave that disclaimer in the beginning, but oh well.
Anyway, yeah, it makes much more sense now.
I'm iffy on the diverter, but I can see where it's a viable option. I only have so much coordination anyway (so I dunno if I could run 3 things at once).

Yep, you did say that you wanted a left handed operated lever valve.

We are here to inform you of the way most other people are operating their grapple.

It is your money, so spend it like you want, and we will still help you.

Besides, I think it is less money to install the diverter valve.

$100 plus two small hoses and some fittings.

Now, if that not a good deal.

You can do lift and curl or lift and grapple at the same time, but not three functions

So this is an old thread, but it's mine, so I can revive it. =)

I have all the stuff to add a diverter to my tractor (L3940) as soon as I have an afternoon free. That's all in a separate thread.

Now for the reason for the revival, my dad's L3710. Since there is a grapple (mine) available for borrowing, my dad suddenly wants hydraulics too. I figured he would go with a diverter like mine, and life would be simple.

Looking at his hydraulics though, I think there is an easier way.

See attached picture of the valve/hose area. I should be able to insert an open center, single spool, lever style "cylinder" valve. Right?
Either the green arrow or the white arrow hose must be going back to tank. As such, I could move it to the new valve, and make a short hose from the old valve to supply the new valve.

All that sound reasonable?

I'd like to mount it where the other green (was supposed to be a different color) arrow points.

A valve like this seems to fit the bill, but I wish the lever came out of it from the end, instead of from the top.

Any ideas? Is my thinking correct on the hydraulics?

Your loader valve should have PB adapter installed to add another valve and the grapple valve should have PB also.

So your flow path should be like this, pump to loader valve, to grapple valve, to hyd blk and then to the rear, maybe remote, or 3pt, to tank.

All return/tank lines go to tank.

The handle will thread in 90* from the shown position which makes it stick up...
I made my own extended handle that is easier to reach from the seat...

I also found this valve, which looks decent, except for the handle position mentioned above.

Is PB different than open center?
From everything JJ said, my original thought/plan sounds correct, but I'm thrown by the power beyond comments.

From this, it seems it's just a term for adding another circuit to the "pressure loop".
http://www.tractorbynet.com/forums/hydraulics/114504-what-power-beyond-spoole-valves.html

but then there's this (woa, spendy!):
1 SPOOL PRINCE AUTO CYCLE LOG SPLITTER VALVE W/PB

and this:

So I'm lost yet again.

PB stands for power beyond and is used in open center hyd system to pass high pressure fluid to the next valve.

The tank line or return line can not handle the high pressure, so the PB adapter is used to safely pass the fluid downstream.

All open center valves should be in series and have PB except the last valve, and on most tractors, that is the 3pt.

The two lever auto valve you indicated is used to setup and do a complete cycle on the cyl/log. Once you set the levers, the cyl will extend fully and retract and then return to neutral.
