Determining a "junker trucks" worth at junkyard

Actually you might do better parking that truck in your front yard. Let your son take the wheels off. Then let it stand as a monument to his carelessness for a few months to make sure all his friends get to see the real thing.
That should stop them from letting him drive their cars.

You gave him a chance, he ruined it, from the look of it your all lucky he's alive and not badly injured. From what you've told there were no extenuating circumstances, no excuses. If he's going to be a Marine he'll need to learn that mistakes have consequences.

And ground him for a couple of months of non-work/school related driving.

I've got an old Toyota pickup that has a blown engine that's been sitting and I am going to rent a large dumpster and push it inside and then fill it up from my metal junk pile.
Few years ago it cost me around 275 to rent the largest for 5 days and they even send me a check from what I made on metal at the junkyard.
.
Does that old Toyota truck have a good frame and 4wd, If so it's probably worth more than scrap.

You've said numerous times "he needs to learn a lesson".
Have the junk yard teach him about finances. They probably have a standard price for everything coming in. Tell them to deduct the towing fee, the fluid and hazmat disposal, labor, and send you a check for the remainder, if any.

First, I'm glad your son wasn't hurt. That's a relief.

Second, I just got rid of an '85 chevy pickup that's been sitting in my back yard for 15 years because "I'm gonna do something with that some day."

It was rotting to the ground. I pulled the engine and transmission for other uses (yeah right) and the junkyard gave me $75 for the body on wheels.

Had the engine, transmission and transfer case been in it, they would have given me $3-400.

I was more than happy with them hauling it off for the $75.

My advice is unless you're specifically going to use that truck for parts for another one exactly like it (compatible) within the next 6 months or less, take it home, pull all the parts, store them in boxes, and scrap the rest ASAP or it will sit there forever and ever.

If you try and part it out yourself, it may bring you a lot more money, but you never know if it's gonna sell or when.

Also, be prepared for oil, antifreeze, brake fluid, transmission fluid, transfer case fluid, planetary headlight pump fluid, etc... to be all over your driveway if you part it out yourself.

North Dakota junkyard prices, your region may be different.
Less than a month ago,
2005 pontiac grand prix, moused out bad tranny $350 delivered
1999 Durango, moused out, not running, $350 delivered
1998 saturn car, bad engine, ugly $200 delivered.
All needed titles to go along with.
While I was there, a VERY rough late '90's Chevy 4x4 1/2 ton with bad auto that ran brought $650.

Wow, those are great prices! Is that typical for the past years in your area or has the value of junk cars gone up with the price of used cars since this whole chip shortage business?

This may be obsolete experience considering everything going on the world recently, but in my experience... In my area, junk vehicles (especially old ones, and wrecked ones) aren't worth anything. If you've got one on your property you can usually get it hauled off without having to pay, maybe get some beer money out of it, but the only way to get a decent buck is to part it out yourself. And once you've had the parting out experience you have a better appreciation for why the junk yards won't pay a "fair" price for anything.

These price jumps may have to do the the extreme price jumps of used (in good working order) vehicles. Think twice about taking that to the junk yard. Craigs list might be a better idea. Some might say "yeah, but she can be fixed up"*

* with apologies to the movie Christine. :)

Along the line of "yeah, but she can be fixed up" just how much trouble would it be to take a sazall to the cab and remove the cab top and get another one from a junk yard and weld it on. maybe either straighten the door out or get some from the junkyard You said the drivetrain still works. I am thinking for a few weekends of work and a few hundred dollars that baby could be on the road again. There are plenty of old bubbas around that have plenty of skills and a mig welder. Never underestimate what a man in a pair of overalls can do.

That truck is worth 0$ at a junk yard I'd wager. If they offer anything higher, take it and leave quickly before they change their mind.
I had a 80 corolla wagon my boy turned into a convertible for the fun of it. Boys will be boys. Another boy had mid 80s Mustang. Both were basically junk. The junk / auto salvage yard was 2 miles away.

In 1995 they told me beat up cars would bring $35 or so. I towed the Corolla down to their lot and went and told them what I had, and they looked at it. Then they started laughing at it, naturally. They said they didn't want it even though they had a car smasher in use.

I said no problem, so I unhooked my chain from the car and drove away leaving it in the driveway..

The mustang I put by the road and just put $35 on the windshield and was glad to see it go. It is tough to sell junk, at least for me. Glad to see it gone. If your car had a 327 of something exotic I wouldn't mess with parting it out. It will just sit for ages while you will be tripping over it.

The local scrap yard pays like $7.50 per hundred pounds. 3500 pounds would be like $262 at that rate. A junk yard probably won’t pay anymore. BTW a junkyard and a scrap yard isn’t the same thing. If you want any hope of getting more than barley anything part it out yourself. An engine and transmission are an easy sale. A front seat of its any good are easy sales. I’m guessing you don’t have a good bumper or front clip but those are easy sales. The front diff, transfer case and rear axle are worth a couple hundred each but they’re hard to sale.
