I thought of putting in a shutoff also but then I decided I didnt want to introduce another failure point in the system.
Below is a link to what I used and I just keep them handy. Pick the right size and then it just clamps down over the fuel line and shuts off the flow when necessary.

@m5040 Then is one on each side of the filter better?
It shouldn't need one on the other side of the filter. It would be the same theory as putting a straw in your drink and when you cap off the top of the straw, you can lift it out without loosing any liquid. Obviously the fuel tank side needs one (or a clamp) because the tank is vented, like taking your finger off the straw.

Fortunately, the Deutz engine's fuel system is self priming so air in the fuel lines is not a problem.

Put a new o ring on and it seems to have stopped the leak, we used it for about 3 hours mowing with no problems.
