Did you buy your tractor out of need or want?

My wife says I can't tell the difference between need & want. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif

A couple of years ago someone told me they were getting a Kubota and showed me the literature about it (BX22?). He was very exited about it. I had never heard of a Kubota, and thought it was quite a bit of overkill for what he needed. But that discussion planted a seed in my mind. As I worked around the yard I came across numerous instances where I thought "that machine would be helpful" for this or that. Then that seed grew into "I could probably use that machine". From there it grew into "I want one". When I retired it blossomed into "I need one of those". Do I really need one? No. But the BX23 keeps me busy and is a lot of fun to use. I've done (or am working on) many projects that I wouldn't have even attempted if I had not bought it. Can I justify the cost for it's need- no. Can I justify the cost for the enjoyment of working around the yard as a hobby- absolutely. Now I'm the excited one showing others the pictures. /forums/images/graemlins/laugh.gif

So I guess that's a "want".

Definitely need - moved out to five acres; tried to mow the pasture with a super-good deisel garden tractor and it was obvious after several months that it was not practical at all. Didn't realize how useful the FEL and box blade would be until I had them, but the tractor and bush Hog was a necessity.

( In the end, I could have let the lawn go, the landscaping didn't have to been done, I don't have anything that says that I have to maintain the property in a nice fashion so I guess that you could say that I wanted to do all of that. )

This fits my situation as well. Actually, I did let the landscaping/maintence go for 10 years. Now the plan is a two year plan to make a nice yard again. I could hire someone else to do it, or I could rent weekend after weekend, or I could make do with a shovel and a cart and work extraorinairly hard (the twenty year plan), but I don't want to.

Same as most here. I bought my B7610 because I wanted one (a Kubota B series) for 9 years.

This week I removed a rock that was near my brush pile in the woods. It stuck up just enough so for the past 12 years I've either hit it with the truck or tripped over it while emptying brush. It took 15 minutes after work, and got it out without even getting out of my work clothes. Didn't break a sweat. 12 years of having a pain in my neck removed in 15 min. Cool.

Last week I mowed my lawn and picked up leaves with the new bagger. Much better than with the smaller lawn tractor & bagger. And much faster. About 20 minutes compared to over an hour the old way. Plus emptying the bags twice as often.

I must say that Henro stated long ago here, that if he had ONE tractor to "do it all" it'd be a B7510/7610. I would def have to agree.

Did I "need" to save that time or remove that rock? No. But I'm sure glad I did.

Actually I was listening to the radio and the song "She thinks my tractor is sexy" was on and I figured that would help. Just maybe she would look at me a bit more /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No actually I needed it. New house landscaping, mowing, moving docks and you know I have neighbors. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I sold my Farmall 340 and Kubota B7100.
I needed to have a tractor to cut lawn.
I wanted a B2910 so I bought it.

I think I bought my tractor out of want.

There are really few needs...we need food, we need water and we may need shelter if it gets cold or wet, or too sunny and hot.

Everything else are wants, really, if you think about it...

If your tractor directly produces food for your family that you could not obtain another way, maybe it becomes a need... /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Myself, I find I have very few needs but lots of wants! /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I wanted my tractor because I needed it. The purchase of the tractor has cut down my trips to the ER. /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif

I physically can not do the things I have to get done without it. No it does not feed, water or shelter me, but there are some things I just cannot do anymore. Now the new tractor with 4WD and Hydro and FEL........well that was a WANT /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif

But a tractor is a need for me.
