Didn't know buying a truck was so hard

the old adage that there's no replacement for displacement is sure getting given a hard run by technology, turbos, and transmissions now.

From a black and white performance standpoint, I agree. From a user-satisfaction standpoint, I respectfully disagree. But I also understand that each use is different, and I cannot tell User A that his/her "stoked-in-the-latest-manner" 1.6L straight 4 isn't inferior to my 7.0L supercharged V8. It MAY well put out more horsepower at some minuscule RPM ranger, and, even more unlikely to propel a vehicle of the same otherwise specs to a superior 1/4 mile time/speed. But I don't care. Give me my Screw Powered 426 stroker any day. Give me a stock 345 NA motor for that matter, that can easily put me in jail.

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

I just purchase my "second" new vehicle last week. A "Toy truck" Tacoma ubiquitous I believe is the model designation. 6 speed crunch box Standard shift is hard to come by.

I had sent out specs via the "build a truck" thing, but all I got was "when can you come and talk about ....".

Since the market is tight, custom factory orders are not supported. So I paid $1000 for a technology package I didn't want, but didn't pay $2000 for the heated seats package that I did want. (after market here I come.

It was tooth and nail to get the "Nitrogen tire fill" $200 taken off the purchase price, and a week to get real documentation for the factory backed extended service agreement.
(Who is going to honor a sharpie written note on a sales brochure?" Those "sales managers must be used to working with the mentally challenged.

I dislike care sales!

At any rate. This is my second new Toyota. The first was in 1983. A Land Cruiser, red in color. Now this light duty pickup. also red. I wish I could have paid the price of the Land Cruiser ;-)

Big question now , do I sell the utility trailer?

My answer is NO! My 1990 F250 could pass as five years old from the looks of it. My pick-up box utility trailer is now on it's third box.

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

Interesting. I love my Ram, and have no need for an 8' box, but I think they're shooting themselves in the foot. You cannot get an 8' box on a 1500. You also cannot get a "regular cab" (2 doors with no space behind the seats) in the "new" i.e. 5th gen version. And there are several trim levels that are only available as a full Crew Cab as opposed to the shorter Quad Cab.

My wife was all set to buy a new ram 1500 until they told her no 8 ft bed. Guess they don稚 want to sell trucks anymore?

Realistically, they probably have done their market research and found that most people who buy 1500s use them as cars, so they design and outfit them that way. I still think it's stupid.

This is so true.

I just wanted a bare bones, full size work truck. No power seats and windows. AM/FM radio v. high end stereo surround sound. Ashtray.

No crew cab.

Good luck.

They basically laugh at you. The trucks had bigger rebates than I wanted to pay for the whole thing.

Times have changed.

The whole short bed thing is annoying. I have a cm work bed on my 3500 crew cab ram

I would love a modern mega cab with a 10ft bed but yea... cant even get an 8ft bed on a mega cab

Yet alone I wouldn't buy any truck newer than 2007 unless I was planning on pulling the motor immediately

I did something similar, but not a mega this spring. Wished I had gone a little further with a steel winch bumper.

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

My wife was all set to buy a new ram 1500 until they told her no 8 ft bed. Guess they don稚 want to sell trucks anymore?

When I went shopping for a "light-duty" pickup my first stop was the local Dodge/Ram dealer because I've owned a Dodge/Cummins 3500 dually for years and have had good luck with it. The dealer had 3 of the Dodge 1500s in stock. Payload sticker on each one was 900 lbs. I was shocked! Not only that, but the "long bed" measured something like 6'4" long. One of my primary uses for this new light-duty pickup was to haul my Yamaha ATV. So, if I loaded my Yamaha and my gear in the Dodge it would already be overloaded. Plus - the bed was too short by a couple inches to have the ATV in the back and still have the tailgate shut.
So - I ended up ordering a Ford F150, supercab XLT model. Standard payload is 1937 lbs - nearly 1000 lbs more than the Dodge! And the bed measures 6'7" long so the Yamaha fits in the back and the tailgate closes. It was available with an 8' bed if I wanted it. Been driving the F150 nearly 5 years now and it has been flawless...all I've had to do is change the oil and rotate the tires.

But I bet the Dodge has a better ride..........

I have nearly the same truck, different color. I like the silver.
