Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

Before buying a pickup I would determine what you will be pulling with it (or might be pulling with it) and figure out if the towing capacity of the truck will work for you.

I bought a used 2014 F250 6.7L diesel as I have an 18 ft trailer and might have to possibly tow my tractor. If I towed a travel trailer frequently I would go with an F250 as I wouldn't want to struggle on mountain passes.

How to Measure Towing Capacity, GVWR, GCWR - Towing 11

I went to the Ford site and the supporting statement in small type at the bottom of the brochure states:
Maximum payload and towing capabilities are for properly equipped base vehicles with required equipment and a 150-lb. driver and vary based on cargo, vehicle configuration, accessories and number of passengers.

I guess if my wife was driving the truck that driver weight would be dead on.

"and a 150-lb driver" Brother, is that a joke. I'm 78, so being this old, I can't remember if or when I ever weighed 150#. Most all "driver weight related" quotes are for a 175# driver. More realistic but still pretty skinny in my case ..........

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

To all the Toyota and Honda bashers, have fun with this:

I google searched, "What Truck Does an old man buy?" Google responded with an article on the Honda Ridgeline.

I had been looking at a Taco 4x4 but climbing into it was ripping up my knees.. I considered adding running boards but... I wasn't thrilled with the Toyota dealer nor with the handling of the Taco truck. So, off to Honda I went. I loved the Ridgeline - was just the right machine for me. I don't need it for heavy lifting. I just want to be able to move larger objects around.

So those that like bashing the Honda brand calling them Ho hos and so on, well, you'll like the nickname I gave my truck: OssoTonka! (you can think of it as "Oh - so Tonka" or for those who know a little Espanol, my nickname is the bear.. so "Bear's toy" was the intention.)

My boss decided that OssoTonka was not too bad. He kind of liked it when he drove it. But, he had to go Big... so he bought a "Fix It Again Tony" RAM 1500 - which we call "RAMbo". It's a nice machine. I hope it holds up for him. His bed carries only a bit more in cubic volume than OssoTonka. It can carry more weight - it can tow more - and the diesel in it along with the huge fuel tank gave him his Highway Cruiser.

Like the threads that speak to buying machines for the intended purpose, there are different trucks for different purposes. Since I need to travel 500 miles each way to the land where the tractor lives, and I am going to do that 10 or more times a year, I need a machine in which I am comfortable. OssoTonka fits that bill and allows me to haul the stuff we need to haul to and on the mountain. Nope, I doubt I can tow the tractor to the dealer over the mountains. But, I could move some other loads we need to move from time to time. It is all about what you need to do.

The boss and I run his business making diagnostic tools for VAG cars... We know something about the car/truck industry and we are learning lots about the Ag machine industry. Note that if VAG ever brings their truck to the USA (the Amarok), we likely will have one.

I like OssoTonka. He likes RAMbo.. too old men happy with their toys! And the banter is worth every penny we spent on the trucks... it's non-stop ripping on each other's ride!

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

Embarrassing moment - So ..... there is my brand new, shinny Taco Wagon. Sitting there on the dealers showroom floor. There were six or seven guys milling around admiring it. After the customary "under carriage" inspection - I go to get in. My God - I can't do it. My knees/body won't bend that far. The young salesman had to help me get in my own truck.

The very next day I went to a local auto parts store - heavy duty running boards are the answer.

I got this vehicle for just a couple reasons - transportation and HAVE FUN. And MAN, is it ever a fun vehicle.

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

Me no bash Hondas to call them Ho Hos. You no bash my Crudevette by calling it plastic Chevy, either. Skin thicker than painted body metal or f-glass. ;)

btw, IMO Ridgeline and humble Element are 'unapproachable' in their classes. Guy who is happy with his purchase need not defend the wisdom of his choice.

It's knocks here for buying what doesn't suit someone else's use that make me laugh.

Element was one of Honda's best vehicles. We had one for just under 10 years and would have bought another.

Re: Didn稚 know buying a truck was so hard

I'm loving my new 2020 F150. Glad I got this body style while I still could. The 21's haven't grown on me yet. They have nicer features, but I like this look. Now my poor F550 sits idle because I don't even want to drive it any more. Only when I gotta go get tractor fuel in the transfer tank.

I know the 3.5 Eco-Boost has more power, but I like my 5.0 litre. I just love the exhaust note of that motor. And on a commute I do every week....my F550 uses $90 of fuel each way, my VW Tiguan 2.0 turbo uses $33 of gas and this F150 uses $28.00!!! It easier on gas than my VW!!!

Great looking truck. Cant get over how cool those toolboxes integrated into the bed are.
Really enjoying my RAM 5500, too
Tremendous towing vehicle.

Paystar is that F150 a long bed? I have a 2017 F150 Supercab also. I knew you could get them with a long bed but have only seen one ever. Nice looking truck.
