Diesel Generator

I believe generators are not required to be Tier 4 Final, so what you are likely getting is Tier 4 Interim, same as most tractors from 2008-2014. It will have a pretty typical diesel stench. Not like the newer tractors that are Tier 4 Final and have some method of filtering or reducing particulate emissions and have a cleaner exhaust.

If you run over a distance, you just need bigger wire -- not a bigger generator. If you look at my generator thread I linked to, I had to use #0 aluminum wire for my 100 foot run from my shed to the home breaker panel in order to minimize voltage drop for 20kW. It was a minor expense to get the thicker wire, so no big deal. You can get whatever size wire is needed to make it feasible.

The 200 amp nexus switch may be enough for your needs. Our required two 200 amp switches. They can be Dailey chained to get 400 amp too.

As far as generator in shop, I wouldn't do it

I put my 10kw diesel gen in my shop. The exhaust goes out through the wall. I made a double wall pipe from 6" tubing with 2" exhaust pipe through the middle. I hooked it up with stainless flex pipe. I never have smelled any exhaust inside. I put small pneumatic tires on the gen frame which isolate any vibration from the floor. You could use some type of rubber pads probably.

If you are going to work in your shop at all while the generator is running.... Same as the house put it in it's own shed far away from anywhere you might work. The noise gets annoying after about a day.

The need to run a backup generator is not an every day occurrence.. During those times when the grid is down, one could compromise on having some extra noise in the shop....

Now an off grid home, with generator backup or a combined heat and power setup, that is a different story, since one would run the generator a lot more regularly in such a scenario, especially in winter. That is a situation where one would not want it to be too far from the home or shop to minimise both ohmic and thermal losses, but one would likely build it its own room with sound insulation and a super sized muffler. It should be able to run while hardly hearing it at all. Everything needed for servicing the engine should be carefully laid out (remote filters for easy and mess free change out, a drain valve for the oil so one is not trying to slide a pan under the engine to an inaccessible spot, easy access fuel filters with big replaceable cartridges) etc etc.

If a person wanted to get tricky, they could make use of the heat from the engine coolant. You could have a radiator in the house with an electric fan, and one on the engine. Just plumb the radiators in series and turn on the fan where you want the heat to go. If my generator was closer to the house I would probably do it, because electric is the only heat I have.

The OP is in Florida... He don't need no stinkin heat !!!:laughing::laughing:

I am moving west to a high altitude site. Average temperatures are a lot lower at 10 000 ft... I got a small diesel generator for that specific reason. But I will have radiant in slab heat and a heat exchanger between the water heater and engine cooling system. No radiator on the engine itself. Probably 1000 gal of hot water storage in an insulated tank under the foundation of the barn. May run the engine once a week when weather (sunshine) does not cooperate, charge the batteries, run the washer and dryer, use any machines I need to in the shop, then shut it down and coast again...

I was in Jacksonville, FL, January of 2003 or so ... (Can't remember for sure) There was snow on Daytona beach! The wait staff at the Outback steakhouse were serving in coats. We ate our dinner with our coats on too. They could'da used some stinkin heat !!!

Hosspuller: I am born and raised in Florida, I will work all day in 100% humidity and 105 deg. If the thermometer hits 55 i'm wearing a jacket, if it hits 45 I aint going outside. But I live in South Florida and Thus far this winter I have turned on the heat 3 days total, non consecutive.

If you dont have power you cant open the windows for a breeze to cool the house cause the mosquitos will of run of with the dog and maybe a kid if they can get a good grip on one.

My neighbor put his Genrac is his garage. When he had problems and the service guy came out, they refused to fix or warranty the machine until it was outside according to the instructions.
