DIESEL PRICE DROP

( Biodiesel takes more fuel to make then it produces. That is a hard sentence to read. It ain't worth it. )

The EPA and USDA don't agree with that statement:

In May of 1998, the US Department of Energy (DOE) and US Department of Agriculture (USDA) published the results of the Biodiesel Lifecycle Inventory Study. It compared findings for a comprehensive "cradle to grave" inventory of materials used; energy resources consumed; and air, water and solid waste emissions generated by petroleum diesel fuels and biodiesel in order to compare the total "lifecycle" costs and benefits of each of the fuels. This 3.5-year study followed US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and private industry approved protocols for conducting this type of research.

The study notes: "In terms of effective use of fossil energy resources, biodiesel yields around 3.2 units of fuel product for every unit of fossil energy consumed in the lifecycle.

Also would we have to keep using fossil fuel to produce the bio fuel ?

I'll be the first to admit that I don't know squat about bio-diesel. However, the last two loads of diesel I got delivered by my local Co-Op was bio-diesel. I honestly can't tell a difference. Being like most people, I don't like change without knowing why, so I asked my Co-Op "why bio-diesel"? They told me that they went to bio-diesel to keep their fuel prices down.

Granted, I have not run it for any extended periods of time, but it burns. I can't feel any difference or see any difference in the exhaust. Anyone see any reason I shouldn't keep buying bio if it's cheaper? I need to fill again in the next week or so. Thanks.

The "fuel" to produce biodiesel is figured into producing the crop not in producing the fuel. The biodiesel plant we have here yields 4.7 gallons of biodiesel for every 1 gallon of fuel used to produce the crop to get the biodiesel. The problem now is that it isn't produced in mass quantities so the cost is higher. The second problem is that the mfg. are making injectors that can't run on 100% biodiesel so it needs to be cut with regular diesel. If we went back to the older injector systems it would run perfectly fine but with the injectors of today one spec of dust can make them go bad.

Gatorboy, I'm not far out of your way, can you swing by and pickup my 2 5 gallon jugs? That will save me a trip. I'll leave them outside the garage. Thanks, JT

Went to work this morning and Citgo regular was $2.07. Just made the trip back home and the same store is $2.15. I'm sure diesel fuel went back up too. Didn't last long did it?

This morning in Decatur IL. gas was 2.039 and after lunch it shot up to 2.359 in just a few hours. Diesel was also 2.359

I filled up the van with gasoline this morning. The price of regular has gone from $2.119 the last day of July to $2.349 today ($.239 cents in 8 days), and diesel was $.20 a gallon more than regular gas. /forums/images/graemlins/frown.gif

On my way into work this morning (8/8) diesel was $2.219, Reg was $2.319. Diesel had assumed it's rightful spot $0.10 less than regular.

The price of all the fuels are too much.

It doesn't make a lot of sense, does it, Charlie? Incidentally, where I filled up was the Wal-Mart in Lewisville. Later today, I went a few miles north and noticed another Wal-Mart was a penny a gallon higher, but right close to it was a Chevron that was $2.459 for regular gas; i.e., 10 cents a gallon higher than the Wal-Mart a hundred yards down the street. /forums/images/graemlins/confused.gif
