Digging out Barn

Wow, you can see the hi-water (poo) line all around the barn. On the walls and the posts. Incredible! But that ole barn sure looks like it was built to last.

I'd be real careful about taking one of those posts out. Unless you plan to run an I beam or something between the two on either side of the missing one, you're leaving a pretty long span unsupported. Ag buildings around here don't need to conform to building codes -- you can do whatever you want when you put one up. Yours may not be up to the local specs as it is, so check before you weaken it any by removing a post.

Your roof doesn't have a lot of pitch and the span in between posts looks to be over the usual 8 feet. If you get any appreciable amount of snow you might wish you had left that pole. How about bringing the truck in from the other side -- make a door where one of the windows is now?

If you park the tractor in the lean-to, could you bring the truck in and nose it into the bay where the tractor is now, then back it in between the posts next to the trailer? That way you wouldn't need to mess with the building at all.

You know, that isn't a bad idea at all. Then I would not have to mess with buying a steal I-beam and all that fun stuff. If I did remove one of the poles I would make sure to support it VERY well with steel. Cutting a door where a window is a awesome idea that I didn't even think of. I'll take some more pictures of the back, maybe you can see which would work better for removing part of the wall, then I could drive in and out with out much issue. You also bring up a good point about moving the tractor and keeping the truck where it is. I may do that as well... It's a pretty large barn so I have some options. I'll get some more pictures posted in a few. Thank you for the suggestions!

Nice Job! It cleaned up great! Should've took it easy on yur tractor and just done it by hand. hehe

HA! If I had to do this by hand, I would still be there. I couldn't even imagine doing that by hand. You would have to use a pick-axe and LOTS of brute strength! I'll leave that to the New Hollans!

Oh man Curls, I got some more (before) pictures for you! You're right, it was NASTY! But, this baby was built VERY well! I'd love to see other (TBN'ers) barn pictures... Check these out!

daTeacha,

Here are some more pictures of the back of the lean-to. What do you think about door placement, I was thinking on the side, where the wall came un-nailed... well, I sort of wacked into it with the FEL :) No real damage though... hehe...

Did you ever ask the previous owner why they "saved" all of that poo?

Where they just to old to remove it?

Too much livestock in one place?

Just bewildered about that amount of poo in a barn!

Sincerely,

All good questions... These people were in their late 40's early 50's... But they had the tools (and kids, hehe) to move the slop, they just were lazy. When I asked them they really didn't say much. From what I was told they had goats in the barn... I guess they showed them at fairs, sold 'em, ate 'em, etc. They ended up selling the place because they needed more room for the goats, hence all the poo poo... Yeah, the pictures don't do justice, it was HUGE! Have a good weekend... I hope you don't have the poo problem that I did!
