Hey guys
Tell me that isn't what I think it is?
It's just about impossible to reach.

Looks like a dipstick to me:) maybe you could fab up an extention for it?

Yep, looks like a dipstick for the engine oil.
My 790's engine oil dipstick is quite short too...and requires the side panel pulled off to check the oil. That's not so bad, but the 419 loader frame prevents removal of the side panel.
No doubt I could rig an extension to pull the stick out, but getting it back in the hole would be very difficult, if at all possible.
So, how do I check the oil? I drop the loader off but don't disconnect the hoses or move the tractor. Once the oil is checked (every 10 hours or so), I re-install the loader. I normally leave the loader off during the spring, summer and fall (since most use is mowing) and most winters the tractor only gets limited use (this winter being the exception due to those snow storms).

Hi Roy
That's not my engine dipstick,it's yellow and up front. This thing is under the hydro high/low lever, what looks to be in the transmission area. I just happened to be looking the tractor over for leaks and loose bolts when I saw this thing.
It's basically hidden, you wouldn't see it unless you knew it was there.

Sorry about that...your picture was such a close up, I thought it was in the engine bay.
Reckon if you really want an accurate answer, you'll have to contact your dealer. Your manual states the transmission fluid is checked at a sight glass at the rear of the tractor.
Don't be surprised if your dealer has to contact Deere to find out why that dipstick is there. When you do find out, please post it in this thread....I'm kind of curious now.

Could the dipstick be a design change that hasn't made it into the operator's manual? It wouldn't be the first time, nor will it the last time such an error has occurred.

Looks like JD Parts calls it a dipstick.

Ahhh, right you are. Not a big deal to me but this brings to mind a number of things where the documentation doesn't match the equipment. For the most part, I think the changes are design improvements where the manuals just haven't caught up yet. This occurs in Orange, Blue and Red equipment as well.

I don't know what model tractor you have, but my 4110 has the same dipstick and the sight glass. It is covered in the manual.

Hey Pipestone
I have a 2009 2520. I looked in my manual and don't see it anywhere. Even if it was,you can barely reach this thing (unless they expect a woman with very small hands to do it) let alone get it out and then replace it:(

Wish my 4310 had a dipstick, I can't always tell what's going on in that little site-glass.

I just went to JD parts and sure enough it's in the transmission housing parts breakdown, but it doesn't have a part number. That tells me, no part number means it doesn't exist!

Greg

JD Parts shows the part number as M807561. $23.65 !!

As shown in my previous attachment, the complete dipstick is item number 25. The individual parts of it are 31 and 32 which are not available separately. If you are registered with your password to JDP, you can put M807561 into Search By: JD part number and come up with availability in your local dealer stock along with price.

That's another downside to constant model changes...the documentation doesn't keep up with what's produced.

Looks like JD Parts calls it a dipstick.

At least it's short enough that Castrol Jimmy won't use it to whip someone with.

I can't speak for the 2520 or their manual, but I can and do agree it is a bugger to use. However, I trust it much more than the sight glass. The only time the sight glass and the dipstick agree is when they have been sitting for about four hours or more-on level ground.
