And just think, now they will be the same company....

The current DirectPC broadband is two way satellite transmission. While it does have some latency, the delay should be under one second in most cases. I would like to hear from someone who is actually presently using the service, just how the latency affects daily service.

Sorry, I figured anyone reading this would have seen my earlier post.

I have Direcway.
It has terrible latency.
It goes SLOW during peak useage.

I love it. It sure beats 21.6kbs dialup.

If I could get ISDN, I would
If I could get cable modem or DSL, a no brainer
If I could get into AT&T's fiber backbone running through my back yard... JUST KIDDING

With satelite you won't ever get Voice over IP, so I can't use it to call my neighbor across the street (a long distance call...)

You won't get to play interactive games, I really can't imagine VPN....

I have been doing satelite data for 15 years, have has both dial return and 2 way, and, actually dial return has BETTER performance, when you consider latency. But 2 way is always on and doesn't tie up a land line. Direcway went through a majur upgrade recently, and it has improved greatly

here is a ping of my dns server on Direcway:

Pinging 198.77.116.8 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 198.77.116.8: bytes=32 time=811ms TTL=62
Reply from 198.77.116.8: bytes=32 time=1016ms TTL=62
Reply from 198.77.116.8: bytes=32 time=810ms TTL=62
Reply from 198.77.116.8: bytes=32 time=700ms TTL=62

Ping statistics for 198.77.116.8:
Packets: Sent = 4, Received = 4, Lost = 0 (0% loss),
Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 700ms, Maximum = 1016ms, Average = 834ms

DSL Reports tweak test always politely suggests that I must be in some third world country based on ping times.

Again, if you have no other choice, you will love satelite. You will also hate it. Just be informed.

My buddy is a network guru at Worldcom. At work he has no shortage of bandwidth, or processor performance. He lives way out, too, and tried satelite, from a repackager, and he tore it out. He was able to get ISDN (128kbs 10ms latency) and loves it. Heck, he can hardly ever get it to bind the B channel, so he's only getting 64kbs. And you can't even begin to imagine his throughput at work (and he does work from home regularly)

the radio is awesome....

Mike: When I click on your "Get Broadband - DSL Reports" Link, I get sent off to web pages that have nothing at all to do with the subject. Actually, it opens up two additional browser windows. One to a non-existant web site titled something about parking and another that changed the two times I tried, first time something about making money from home and second time something about high school reunions....

I went into view page source and can see that the link you pointed to is www.dslreports.com and when I type that url into the browser it goes to the correct web site.

Puzzling....

Not puzzling; stupid mistake on my part, thanks for pointing it out. I edited the original post, and it should work now

Also, does DirecWay still have the FAP (Fair Access Policy) where they monitor how much you download and, if you download too much, they slowly cut back your speed?

FAP is still here. I have never had trouble with it, even on a small LAN. If you were really pulling down tons of music or trying to set up a micro isp for your neighborhood, FAP will catch up with you...

But I haven't been FAPped.

Thanks for the info Roger. It sounds like I'll be OK if I use that as my internet solution as I ran two coax to most locations. Do I understand though you only need the two coax to a central point then in-house network (cat5) from there to the PCs?

If I don't fall asleep soon, I'll post a picture of my wiring under the "smart home wiring" thread /w3tcompact/icons/smile.gif

The main problem I have with Lotus notes is its completely non-windows interface. One of the main advantages to me of Windows and even x-windows is a unified look and feel for most applications. Kind of keeps from having such a steep learning curve with each new application you learn. Lotus apparently thinks quite differently about this issue, with double click buttons, etc. which completely baffle me every time I have to work on a Lotus Notes system. A really funny web site to look at about user interface design mistakes is the interface hall of shame here. The site is really out of date, having last been updated in 2000, but the information presented there is timeless. Really funny to me as a software developer.

Yep, so long as it's Satelite grade RG6 not cable TV coax....

Rocky,

Thanks for a tremendously informative psot. I do live waaay out, and need something. But it seems like DirectPC and similar services have a ways to go before they will be very satisfying to those accustomed to cable or T1s. I am still waiting...like on 26.4...Thanks again.

Don't know about DirecWay but Starband does not want to have ANY connections in the coax between the dish and PC. The coax cable is a pair: one for transmit and the other for receiving. In our house we were able to utilize the 3/4" conduit we had in the walls for the low-voltage wiring. The installer said that if we did not have the conduit that they would have had to run the cable on the outside of the house and punch through the wall.

Mike, does DirecWay also use the coax pair? And do they also want a continuous run from the dish to the PC with a total length less then 100ft?

I wonder if it really that stringent. I have dual runs of RG-59 (not even RG-6) installed to every room. When I bought a DirectTV receiver for the MBR, I thought I was going to have to run new cable from the dish to the MBR. A local satellite guy said to not bother, just use my RG-59. So I have cable from the dish to the patch panel in the basement and then to the MBR box and then another run from the box to the receiver. The total run is probably close to 100'. Signal strength normally runs above 90%.
