My 1st bike was a Honda 90 cc,then I hada Yamaha 100,Yamaha 125 and Kawasaki 175.
I even had an old Honda 300 (what a tank).
I have not trail ridden for years, but looking back it sure was fun.
A neighbor of mine had a Honda 70,it was a good dependable bike.

My first bike was a 1972 Honda SL-70. My brother bought it new, and I bought it from him when I was in the 5th grade.

I used that bike for another 25 years without a breakdown.
I did though replace the rear shocks with some 125 cc shocks.

I since gave the bike back to my brothers kids so now they can enjoy it also. The bike is now 31 years old with almost all original equipment.

What a bike.

"I had a CR450. Drum brakes, 4spd open classer."

Whoa horses, the CR450F I owned was a brand new 4 stroke 2003 model. What kinda brakes?, this one had disc brakes and an engine spawned from Hell itself. It WAS and IS the badest MX dirt bike on the planet--BAR NONE /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif. More than 50 horses and more than 10,000 RPM and a power band that started down low and pulled like a rocket ship all the way to the redline. YES, 4-stroke, all out MXer. The only thing I have ridden with comparable power on tap over such a wide range was a Maico 500. The CR450F is a mean machine and way to much bike for an "old" guy. It is also a 5 speed by the way and weighs about 230 lbs. Holy Cow. /forums/images/graemlins/shocked.gif Honda, for 2004 has a new CR250F 4 stroke MXer even lighter and still very fast, not available last year. J

Re: Dirt/trail bike riders here whats your favorit

I'll date myself. My first dirt bike was a Kawasaki 238 Greenstreak. It was stout but had no suspension, drove like a brick. I used to race a Yamaha 465 desert. It was a ton of fun, gawd, the memories..............

I once wrecked the 238 on a hill climb and woke up forty five miles later. There was the doctor and the nurse with cutting tools. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif I still have a scar that looks like a bullet hole in my left knee. I lost the week, gone. Busted the left wrist along with anything sticking out on the bike and the Bell helmet.

I had a bud I rode with who'd lost his right leg at the knee in a street bike accident. His next bike was a Matador. Then when the Pursang came out he got it. The reason he went with Bultaco was it was easy to run a jackshaft over so the shifter could be just above the brake. More than once he lost it on a hill out in the middle of nowhere and I'd have to go up and ride that puppy down. Not only was it on the wrong side, but it was under the shifter. /forums/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

I avoid motorcycles now. The last one I rode was a 996 Superhawk and before that a Harley twelve hundred cc Sportster.

There's been a disproportionate aging rate between the mind and body. /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif /forums/images/graemlins/grin.gif They've accelerated in opposite directions. /forums/images/graemlins/tongue.gif

Re: Dirt/trail bike riders here whats your favorit

They must be reusing number/id configurations. Mine was a 1981 air cooled 450 2-stroke. It was Honda's first open class bike.

The new four-strokes are pretty cool. Lotta $$$ for a new dirt bike these days though /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif That's why I have this 86 YZ250...

Remember the motorcyle dare devils that were jumping trucks etc. I seen a guy jump 13 Datsun pickups at the local racetrack,he did not use a landing ramp either (Bob Gill ?) He held the Worlds record in distance at the time and attempted to jump a lake later on(to break his own record) and fell short and hit the bank and paralyzed himsef. This was about 1973 or 1974.
This all was going on about the time Evel Knievel attempted the Snake River canyon .

( I had a 198? YZ465. Almost impossible to get started - I swear that a kick on the starter was only good for one revolution on the crank )

Was it the one with the bulge right at the exhaust manifold? (in the pipe itself). I recall reading where it was supposed to smooth out this or that in the power band...but it also looked like the engine swallowed a mouse and it was stuck in the pipe /forums/images/graemlins/smile.gif

I don't recall mine being hard to start though. Maybe couple kicks when cold, but easy when warm. The hard part was rearing my leg up that high while standing on ground to stab at the starter.

Same issue now with my Maico... as I recall being told once, the 1983 Maico was the highest seat height they ever had from the factory, and since I'm not known for my length of leg, I need a milk crate to stand on while kicking. In fact, just like in the cartoons, I was riding it once, drove it to a stop, put my leg down to hold up... guess I didn't slide my butt far enough over in the seat, and just like Fred Flinstone in his car... I went "plop" and fell on my side. I was at a standstill and I'm sure if anyone was watching it either looked like I planned it, or I'm just more of a buffoon than I seem to be.

I hate it when I kick the kicker (without being focused to follow through with the stroke) and the darn thing kicks back at me and about pushes my foot up through my mouth /forums/images/graemlins/crazy.gif I've actually had a 1/2 day limp once when it did that to me and put the whammy on the underside of my foot.
