Hey guys!

Any input as to how to more correctly hook up a disc to disturb the soil enough for replanting a hay field. Tried putting it on the tow bar of the 4720 and bogged it down. Is it more correct to hook it to the drawbar? Do not have rear hydraulics to push up the disc with the transport wheels. Soil is medium clay loam that has not been worked for about 5 years. Seems like if i hit it often enough it should break it up (the soil) with the wings at full angle. 4 wings, about 8 or so discs per wing.

Disks depend on horsepower available to pull them.

Set them at the proper angle to turn dirt and it take's a few HP on sod to do a proper job.

Reduce the angle and not much of anything happens.:D

Try reducing the angle until it pulls without bogging down the tractor. You also want to pull it faster than you may realize to get the dirt moving.

After a few passes with a non-agressive angle, increase the angle in stages to get to where you can start moving dirt and still not bog down.

On sod bound fields, you may want to use a bottom plow or chisel plow first.

I would not call the field exactly sod bound, more like weed bound, hence wanting to replant it.

Did not run out of horsepower by any means. Ran out of traction, even with diff lock and 4 wheel assist.

Was thinking if hooked up to the drawbar arms instead of the tow bar might have more control over how much drag there is, no top link, just the transport wheels. But since it has been raining for 2 days now ( a nice light rain) will be a couple days before can get out there.

Thanks all for the hints, esp the calculator, that is cool!

On the up side watched the Highlander mom have her calf nite before last, have to go looking for it again to see if the coyotes left it alone. Mom seemed like a good mother, i think she is a first timer.
