DISCOVERYS OF UNSAFE TRACTORING PRACTICES

When using the brush cutter and having the FEL bucket low, you might start pushing hidden downed trees with the FEL, if they start to hang up and bow --> STOP! It is also very important that you don't look back at the cutter for more than a few seconds while moving. If you aren't looking and not stopping as that 10" diameter dead (but springy!!) tree bows alarmingly you may find out that it can climb up out of the bucket, slide up the FEL arms then >TWANG!< fly at you with the speed of fright. If you're lucky it will only dent the hood and get stopped while slapping the tilt steering wheel down onto your thigh. (Giving a bruise from hip to below the knee). If you're lucky...

Upon sober review of the above situation, when I looked forward and saw the tree bowing, I did stop the tractor. In fact, I tried to back up. That's when it went >TWANG!<. So, the best advice is to get the heck off of the tractor, fast. Had the tree not been stopped by the steering wheel, it would have kept going until it stopped at the ROPS. Unfortunately, that would have meant going thru me and the seat first.

So get off and remove the tension from the tree. If it hits the tractor, so be it. Tractors can be fixed both faster and cheaper than a person.

OK guys... I'm guilty and I'm not an old timer yet. I have put the old ford in first gear low range with a hay wagon behind it, jumped off and loaded the hay wagon while the tractor just creeped along. Would have to jump on the tractor every now and then to correct the steering but in granny gear I could move much faster than the tractor.

When I was 19-20 I used to do something like that, Ford 460, 5 speed, 4x4 in first gear (crawler) low range, I'd let it creep and jump out to walk allong beside it just to see the look on peoples faces :D

What happened to the Captain?

Promotion, Promotion, Promotion. Last I heard, he was the Commander, Naval Air Forces, Pacific Fleet. This was 20 years ago. At the end of our WESTPAC cruise, we called this our MUDPAC.
