i COULD go with a roof mounted antenna...if i wanted to watch a bland tv: prior to the
stations going digital, we received 3 channels: now one sometimes: i guess i will call dish and see if they will deal a little bit..thanks for all the input..at least i don't feel like i am the only one paying a lot of money for tv now.

Sorry if this was already asked didn't get a chance to look through all 4 pages of info. With everyone talking about satellite TV what do you use for internet. I've done some research but not a lot. When I add up the cost of just cable internet service and Satellite TV the cost is about the same as what I pay at the local cable company with the "package" deal.

I've been paying for Verizon Fios, with TV and Internet. Like you, I'm tired of paying the monthly service charge, plus $19.99 for the DVR, and $6.00 each for two additional boxes. Seriously considering dropping the television, using a digital antenna for broadcast channels, and Roku for television. Roku uses the wireless signal from the internet, and streams content to your television. With a subscription to Netflix and Hulu for about $8 per month each, you will pretty much get everything you had before (Netflix and Hulu stream most television shows). Fox News, CNN, MSNBC, ESPN have apps which stream their content over the internet (which can be viewed on your television via Roku). More and more stations are going this route

I have a friend who went this route 5 months ago and loves it. I'm about ready to do it.

Boxee is another device, but from what I understand, not as good. You can also do this with Ps3.

my internet is to slow to stream tv shows: i pay @ $90 a month for a 1.5M dsl line, and unlimited phone service with a "teen line": and all the options that the teleco offers, 3 way calling, call forwarding, call waiting, caller id, etc etc etc: but..i "just" got the message below from dish: please read it an tell me if it says the same thing to you, that it does to me? the $668.86 is my total bill, not $1000 for a year??? i paid the same thing last year, and then have been paying a $27.56 monthly bill on top of that???

That was true when I bought my whole system from Circuit City in Waco in May, 1997, for $322.58, then went to Radio Shack and bought an antenna for $76.83 for the local channels and installed it all myself, with a little help from a brother, but now my DirecTV receivers are leased from DirecTV and they installed everything.

just talked to the dish billing folks...its $1000.06 a year..the 668 doesn't include the local channels, or the 3 dvrs or the monthly maintenance plan...i guess i will send them the money..i don't see any options other than ones that take a heck of a lot of work or figuring things out...an i am tired of figuring things out..

As a kid of maybe 14 walking in the woods near Little Red River out of Low Gap road toward Alread came to a vacant house and inside was a wall type crank Phone. no longer a road it had been that long since anyone lived in the area. Today 60 years later cannot even locate the former house.
Where we lived there was no phone but a line was being built. Power co. power line stopped at our house.
No t.v. either.

My neighbor owns Arkansas Telephone Co., now called ARTELCO. They have come a long way pushing DSL out into tne country. Long history there!

My first dish receiver cost me $5. Dish was young then and was giving away systems to get subscribers. I used it for about 10 yrs before the hard drive died. Renting one for $5 month * 10 yrs, I saved a bunch. Then I bought an HD 722 DVR, but refused to pay the extra $$ for HD. finally about a yr ago dish started including HD for free. My 2nd tuner in the 722 does not cost extra. There is a DVR fee, which you pay if you rent or own.

I also can't get very high speed internet, so steaming via the internet won't work.

After inventing the internet, Gore invented global warming.

Lawrence, how do they know you have an additional receiver? If I owned a working receiver, it would be hidden when they came around. I have my whole house wired and often go into my box to put in a splitter and change the routing of my DishNet signal. I have 3 TVs that can see the DVR output because I put the signal on a duplicate line and bought an extra RF remote off the internet. I can watch the DVR anywhere in my house.

Each box whether owned or leased must be on an active account. Directv has the serial # of each of my boxes as well as the access card within each box. In order to receive a signal to any box it must be active in Directv's system. I have tried hooking up an old box I have and the screen says something like "no subscription for this programming."

We have 1.5 DSL. A few weeks ago I finally got around to getting Ethernet to my BD player which then feeds the receiver and finally the TV.

Netflixs and Amazon Prime video's stream perfectly to the TV even when one of the kids was watching a video stream on the PC and the wifey and I were browsing the Internet. I was impressed. :thumbsup: It is not HD just SD but it works just fine.

We are paying just a bit under $90 a month of Directv. Given how few of the channels are watched, and much of what we watch is reruns, Directv is just not worth it to me and the wife. The kids though do watch quite a few shows on the Disney channels. I suspect we will just buy them the DVDs of the shows they like to watch and cancel Directv.

We are going to continue Directv for a month or two and see how things work out with Prime and Netflixs. So far so good. We have to look at Hulu as well. Disney content is the real issue we have to resolve.

Netflix is $8-9 a month. Amazon Prime is about the same but gives us free second day shipping and a free book loan each month for the Kindle. Both services are not even $20 a month compared to almost $90.
