So I've been pondering a diverter vs. 3rd function and how to mount it.

At first, I was 3rd function all the way. At $900 from Kubota, it's pretty steep.
A diverter valve (like JJ has suggested) at $150 sounds pretty good. Add some hoses, misc. wiring. Maybe $300 or $350 out the door.
In addition to the cost, the hydraulic capacities that Mtn View pointed out have me pondering.

So at this point, I'm not sure if I can imagine having enough coordination to run a loader in 2 directions and a grapple open/close. More than likely, it'll be one item at a time. So why not save the $. I have a parker store about 1/2 mile from work, so I can do hoses easily. I can probably get them to give me some scraps so that I can route them and get them the RIGHT length. I have wire, I can handle that. Put a connector in where the hydraulic QDs are, so I can remove the loader. Not sure about what kind of switch I'd want yet, but that's easy enough. Likely a button on top of my existing loader knob. Or, I had pondered a floor/foot switch, like an old-school chevy headlight dimmer switch.

I guess at the end of the day, I'm looking for installation pictures. I saw KennyDs pictures, on the right loader arm. Seems reasonable. I had envisioned mounting it on the loader cross member. I'd have to tap the feed off of the steel lines, then cap off the steel line that goes to the far cylinder. Somehow I'd like to run the new lines as OEM as I can, behind the guard or *something*. Maybe put the grapple QDs hard plumbed right off the diverter block.

Thoughts?

I like the right loader mast for mounting. Here is why:
-Well protected
-No messing with the hardlines
-Wiring is shorter
Mounted out on the torque tube it would be quite vulnerable, especially with the hoses looping off of it.

As for hose lengths, just use a garden or air hose, then cable/zip tie in place and finally mark or tape where the fitting will go. Then you can easily straighten it out an measure.

Any recommendations on valves?

This is one JJ listed, which seems reasonable.
SAE 8 15 GPM DOUBLE SELECTOR VALVE 12 VDC P15544-1

Do I need 15GPM? Wondering if there is a smaller valve that isn't as oversized in regards to flow.

In an entertaining twist, I was doing this legwork just so that I knew what I was going to do someday in the future. Well, turns out I'm getting a grapple for Christmas, and picking it up this coming weekend. I'm not sure I'll be able to hook it up till spring, but now I need to know all this stuff FOR REAL.

We sell a diverter that includes a switch and wiring.

Thanks Kenny. I am keeping your kit in mind. I would prefer to do my own wiring though, and with that I don't want to pay for it and not use it. =)

I think I like this valve for the mounting and general compactness, would it work for me?

It seems better because there is only one solenoid (instead of 2) and the plumbing should work out well (or fairly well, anyway) because there are no ports on the "back" side.

I'll sell you that valve for $112 shipped to your door.

Dang. I'm gunning for it for Christmas, but I think that offer will be taken. Good choice for me, then?

That valve will work just fine, and Brian has the best price hands down on it

The only "problem" (IMHO) with it is that hoses exit it on three sides so it does make mounting a bit more difficult depending on the situation, but otherwise its a good valve.

Brian, is a Hirschmann connector included for that price? They used to be extra at the Surplus Center, but it looks like its included now.

Do you know the hole-to-hole distance on that valve? Can it swing a 90 in both fittings?

Kenny,
That valve works well and a neat installation can be had with 90 degree swivel fittings. It works great on my installation. 5-26-12 Diverter Valve with Lines Attached.jpg

Could you do those 90s without the extensions? Sure doesn't look like it.

That's what I figured. Good to know. Best to have no surprises. Thanks.

Thanks Brandi, I know it works well-its a good, compact dvalve-I was just pointing out the the ports are on three sides as apposed to two and that could make a difference in some installations.. I didn't mean to sound like I was bashing it (or Brian).

The other DValves from the Surplus Center (5117-A and the 9-5117) that are frequently mentioned on the forum have ports both front and back, making mounting difficult also.

I just want people to be informed about the different choices available, sometimes "least cost" is not necessarily "best cost".

Here are a few answers for you guys.

Yes the connector comes with the valve.

No 90s will not fit into the $112 valve that we are talking about. Yes they can be made to fit, this = more $$$ though.

The centerline distance on the $112 valve is 1&7/16". The ports are #8 ORB. My recommendation is to go with a male #8ORB - male #6JIC and go from there with what you need.

Brandy, you have a Bosch valve, that is a different animal than the valve that Aceblank is considering. Your valve is currently $224 shipped.

Yes with the Bosch valve std short 90s will fit side by side if you use the right fittings. The Bosch port - port dimension is 1& 9/16".

All of these valves will work fine for most of us. If someone uses their equipment commercially putting a 1000 hours a year or more, then you need to check into what valve will last longer, but for most of us, any of them will do what we want them to do.

Thanks for the info Brian. Do you sell fittings too (I'm sure you do)? Maybe I'll take a stab at what I'll need and get it all at once. I'm assuming you'll be cheaper than my nearby parker store. I think an ORB is what I would call an "SAE" Straight thread, with oring. Does that sound right?

Does anyone know what fittings/hoses my loader has? I'm assuming they're about 1/2" JIC, but I don't even know.

Maybe I'll take the rest offline with Brian. I'll get a diagram of some sort put together to show what I'm thinking.

Kenny,
No problem. Don't worry about Brian. Remember, he once was Michael Jackson's neighbor.

Uhh.......I thought he mentioned a valve with fittings on all 3 sides similiar to mine? Anyway, the link I showed in my thread for my valve says it's not found. I can't believe my valve is $80 more now.
