I made a front bumper out of two pieces of 4" pipe.. I filled them with concrete, and used threaded rod and hardware to hold them together.. and also for mounting studs to mount on my tractor bumper. Was maybee 3' wide.

Just to clarify my post, I thought it was pretty neat that TBAR had one of each type tires on the tractor...and remembering how many times we seem to discuss the advantage of one tire type over the other...well...it just struck me that having one of each, side by side, on the same tractor might put one as close as possible to an objective assessment of performance.

Anyway, TBAR, I did not intend to be nasty or anything like that...please don't take my post in that light, because it was not meant that way.

I really do think you may be closer to understanding the performance of R1 vs R4 than most of us here... /forums/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Tbar . . . here are mine. I used EZ Weight brackets, but made my own weights out of 9.5" bar stock. I've got a total of 100# of weight, each piece is 25#. The weights were added inside the front wheels.

Great idea for the extra weight but I can not see any of the picts. The webshots site takes me to a wallpaper page. Have needed extra weight a few times and have thought of adding a water based solution to the inner tubes, but did not want the weight to be permanent.

Regardless, it's still good information.
I have been thinking of making a 3PT box that could also be hung off the front bumper
It would hold sections of Lally column with a "U" of rebar welded on one end for a handle .
With that setup you could dial in your ballast weight fairly quickly.

The cheapest weight is concrete (although a bit bulkier than steel). Here are my weights. The suitcase type weights are on a drawbar and the block is on a hitch receiver.

here's some bumper plate weights I made for my ford 4600 a few years ago... big time zombie thread!!

concrete and #10 or 9 brace wire.. plus large bolts or chunks of allthread.

Thanks for the reply. It may be 10 year "old" information but for myself and others down the road it is great info. Thanks to all who have used the web to make it possible for us new guys to get a jump start on getting the stuff we need to know. Have a great day.

A good place to get some weights is Goodwill. Sometimes they are priced a little high, but the other day I got a set of those square flat ones that go on one of those weight machines for 55 cents apiece. I am going to make some metal rods that stick up on the rear of my tractor and the weights will slip right over the rods.

I really like the idea of DIY weights. But the weight density of concrete is less than steel or casted steel. I've skimmed through about two dozen youttube vids on DIY weight making too. There are some clever methods out there. Pros are, you can do it fairly cheaply and shape them for the use needed. Cons are, steel is not cheap and concrete requires more mass size.

Now the generic 42lbs John Deere weights fit many tractors. These were originally done by Yanmar back in the early 70s.

the concrete is soooo cheap and easy to form that even though less dense, it's still not bad if you have the room.

cast iron is king.. but the prices are terrible.
