My tractor occasionally slams after stopping and changing from 2 to 4 wheel drive. This usually happens after restarting in either forward or reverse. I have tried going forward then reverse then back into forward in hopes of avoiding the clunk. Any suggestions as to how to avoid this from happening in the future.

Need 'mo info: When clunk happens: when switch is engaged to select 4x4? After you start moving when 4x4 is engaged? # of hours on tractor, recent services on tractor, etc.
What are you doing in 4x4- snow pushing?

Make sure your front wheels are straight when going from 2wd to 4wd and 4wd to 2wd.

Sounds like you are having slipage when going into 4wd causing that. I make sure I am off the throttle when engaging and when I pop out of 4wd I usually then come to a complete stop. Makes it easier to be sure it's completely disengaged.

It could be other issues but that's what I've experienced with mine.

Come to think of it my DK35SE HST "clunks" once in a while when going out of 4WD. because i was moving a bit or possibly in turn. I found the same on my Mahindra HST and its a manual 4wd unlike the Kioti which is electric. The mahindra is well over 1100 hours and the kioti is at about 100 hours. I guess the key is STOP then engage or disengage. Don't feel there's any problem other than a slight operator error. . .John

With both my former DK-35se/hst and now my DK-40se/hst I make sure I'm stopped before engaging 4wd, and when moving forward i usually DIS-engage 4wd. I think it is easier to disengage when moving, SLOWLY in a straight line with no load on the tractor/4wd.
JMHO.
The only clunk I usually hear is when disengaging the differential lock pedal -it will sometimes clunk a few seconds after releasing the pedal- but I don't think it indicates any fault condition.

Tractor has about 370 hrs last time it happened I was getting out of 4wd and going into 2 wd on my paved drive ( maybe I should have Droped it out of 4wd while still on dirt? Wheels were strait. I think it usually happens going from 4wd to 2wd. It has maybe happened 8 or 10 times since new. Makes a pretty good clunk when it happens. I would never be able to duplicate it to show a dealer happens so infrequently I do not know of any commonality to when it happens.

This time after I stopped and put it 2 wd I also went back and forth in hope of avoiding it still happened.

I think its hydraulic ram that engages a collar to the front transfer shaft. I only ever feel it disengage when there is some binding between the front axles. Find the free service manual link here and have a look at the diagram, then you can visualize what's going on and that might help diagnose the problem.

I called dealer about the clunking he suggested I check the front tire pressure because if there is difference in pressure that could cause this problem. There is still a slight clunk after getting the pressure equal in each of the front tires deffinetly better then before. Still not like when it was new though.

On my 40 hst, I always come to a compete stop, then hit the switch, then back up 8-10 feet before going forward...no clunk.

Derek...shuttle of HST?

Good to hear you got it fixed under warranty.
When I look at the diagram I don't really see what difference it makes to be stopped or not when engaging 4wd, and for the first few days I only made sure the tractor was going straight with no real load on the drivetrain and it seemed to work fine but now I stop every time. Better safe than sorry and no one is paying me by the bucket load.

HST I tried every different way to drop it out of 4wd nothing worked dealer thought he would have to get into the tranny at first but fortunately it was the solenoid and switch. Seems to be fine now.
