I'm glad you are up and running but cannot understand why it didn't start with the SS physically removed from the engine block. The SS has a spring-loaded plunger that forces the IP to the zero fuel position (stop) when you switch the engine off. With the SS removed, the IP should have functioned normally (engine should have started). So I'm confused.
By the way, listen for the stop solenoid operation so you'll know what it should sound like (ref post 9 para 2). You should get a very distinct "clack" when you turn the switch to ON and again when you turn it to OFF (but engine noise drowns out this second clack if it's running) . The fact that the relay fixed the problem indicates the SS was never retracted because it didn't get the one-sec "pull" pulse when you switched the key ON. This is a fairly common problem but I discounted it when completely removing the SS didn't help
Also by the way, disconnecting the wires from the SS with the SS installed guarantees the engine cannot start, FYI.
