DK45S/10k Trailer

Our Pa licenses dont really explain what you can or cant do. DOT cops say alot of different things when it comes to vehicle codes. I wish it was spelled out what a class C guy like me can or cant do when it comes to trucks and towing.

Do we have any PA DOT guys here to set us straight? lol

For starters are you commercial?

No I am not commerical. I talked with a individual from the DMV and Motor carrier enforcement today about registrations and trailers and drivers licenses. I got all the facts and more, lol. Was basically an hour long conversation while I was at work, didnt get a chance to take notes, I wish I had.

So what did they tell you?

They told me in my case I am private use non commerical, I dont need a CDL or Medical card. If my trailer is over 10k i need to obtain combo weight reg for my truck and then im subject to semi annual state inspection!! So as long as im private use and under 10k im good to go in so many words.

A Maryland state trooper told me: commercial operator - over 10K of trailer regardless of total weight: CDL. Noncommercial operator - no CDL as long as under 26K total. I think this is to address the RV'ers. But sure does screw the commercial guys.

That is very ambiguos.

A trailer over 10k isn't commercial unless the CGVWR of the combination is over 26k.

He is wrong. You do not need a CDL until you breach 26,001lbs whether it be with a straight job truck or a combination.
You will need a Medical Card.
Your vehicle will also need to be licensed properly.

I have a CK30 FEL/BH that I move with a 7000lb gvw. When I checked the tractor with FEL/BH they were around 6700 hundred lb's.I move the equipment with a Chev. 4x4 with a hd trailoring package. So far I have not had a problem. After reading a the discussions on weight I might be pushing mine.Any comments would be greatly appreaciated.

You are over the limit. The 7000 lbs includes the trailer weight, which is propably 2000 lbs or so. Then add chains, binders, fuels, etc. If you have an accident while carrying that load, and someone is hurt, you could be in for a heap lot of trouble.

I wanted very much to reason and justify a 7K trailer for my rig. But, I decided it wasn't worth it to risk lives and my future over a few dollars in trailer cost.
