Do I "un-sell" My BX1860?

I wouldn't lose much sleep over letting him take the $1000 hit. He'll probably be happy with it since he offered and you have to go through the selling process all over again. Your time is worth something. Sounds a like a win win. If you resell it really quickly for the same money, THEN you could consider reducing it to $500.

This is one of those things where people say I'm too nice, but I'd give the guy a break, and send all his money back to him, or have him come pick it up. If there was a bill of sale, I'd make up a new one too.
I always use the golden rule.. and I'd be happy to get all my money back too. You'll feel better too, and he'll tell everyone what a nice guy you are, and your wife will be happy getting to keep the bx... for now.

Hopefully, an interesting story.
Called a couple of friendly dealers, even reached out to a few who hang out here, but trading in a 10 month machine would mean a beating I wasn't willing to take. Listed it, along with the front hydraulic plow and QH on a few sites. This was during the February snow events from coast to coast.
*The phone rang off the hook about the front blade and sold it easily for what I had paid for it, $1750. A guy drove up from Ohio and grabbed it. With some patience, I also agreed to sell the tractor to a fella who had seen the Craigslist and came over and we agreed on a price, about half way between what I had paid and what was being offered to trade in. I was quite satisfied. He put down a hefty deposit and followed up with the cash. Said he'd pick up the tractor in a "few weeks", which was fine with me. He didn't seem like the "tractor type", if you know what I mean and I remember thinking he was buying a bit on impulse, but, hey!, who was I to question it?

So I commenced shopping prices and availability of a B2320. I didn't particularly enjoy what I was hearing, but was committed and so the process continued. This "switch" is going to cost and the wife was somewhat grumpy about it, as she liked the BX.

This morning, he called. (you gotta know what's coming next) He wanted to know if I would consider buying the tractor back.

I've told the wife and she said immediately that she just as soon have the BX back and not have more debt nor a larger machine, as she didn't feel as comfortable on it in tight quarters. Interesting. She asked if there was a way to work around the cultivation issue.

Well, that's where it stands right now. Do I or don't I? Do I really nick him for some funds for this deal, or not? Hmmmm...

I'd take him up on it.

Sounds like a whale of a deal to me.

The guy should give you something for all the hassle this situation has created. I think $1,000 is not too much, considering.

Do you have room for another tractor and would your wife put up with it?

If the answer is "yes", my suggestion is

1. Keep the BX so your wife is happy.

2. The $1,750 from the snow blade plus the $1,000 would buy you a pretty good old Farmall/Allis/JD, just to mention the more common ones, that are perfect for cultivating. If/when your commercial gardening project is finished, sell it for the same price as you bought it.

I tend to agree with the keep the grand crowd. The original deal was a bussiness deal that both parties were satisfied with. Circumstances changed and a new deal is being offered. The buyer understands yours and his situation and is offering a new deal that he's satisfied with hopes you will be too. You will be helping him out by just taking his offer and helping yourself out by being compensated for your trouble. Sounds fair to me.

In my inner ear, I still hear the voice of my dad, may he rest in peace. "Do the right thing. " "The only person you really have to live with is yourself." Those sayings and a whole lot more guide my life. Whatever the case may be, this fellow was either over excited, or he genuinely needs to un-ring the bell he rang. Either way, except for a small tuition fee, that is just and fair, I will let him go on with his life. Hopefully, a little wiser for the lesson learned and grace extended.

No would haves, should haves, might haves. Each of us has to live with the guy in the mirror we shave each morning.

Thanks for all the good discussion, fellas. That part is over. Now, the wife and I are heading down the interstate an hour's drive for some shopping, a visit to the Kubota dealer and some conversation along the way.

For me? We were barely out of our teens when we got married some 39 years ago. We have a certain way. We've been partners through kids, grandkids, thick and thin, mostly thin. Joys and heartaches, good times and bad. Her input and wisdom is something that balances me out. It works.

Congratulations!:thumbsup: I sort of knew you'd do the right thing or you wouldn't have questioned keeping the money. Again, I applaud you!!! If you have children one day they will also face situations where they will "know what Dad would want them to do". That's worth more than any amount of money. We all make mistakes and education costs or it usually has me. I agree with a bit of tuition for education. I believe you will benefit with peace of mind and I also believe you'll come out ahead.:thumbsup:

Well, We have a good drive down the road. Had a meal together, and the wife and I just talked things through. After some shopping for things she needed, we stopped at the Kubota dealer and talked with Steve at Miscisin Brothers. Good guy who I have dealt with in the past for things.

My wife drove the 2320 a bit more. "It's higher to step up into". Yup, it is.
"It doesn't turn quite as sharp". Nope, it doesn't. "I'm sitting up higher". Yes, dear, you are. But then the admission, that yes, she could adjust. Went back in and talked money. Bottom line was $4500 plus tax, or might as well say $5000 out the door, difference, with BX in trade. That price was fair enough. I know. I had checked other places. That was bare tractor to bare tractor. A FEL would add $2700, and so on and so on.

We have previously agreed among ourselves on the drive down that this would be too much money, right now. This is mostly her point of view, but again, I listen to her. Her point is well taken. Let this crop season contract run its course. Get by this season and evaluate the profit/loss of it in September when the monies all get counted. Should the contract pay off well, we could certainly justify the B model for future contracts. If it didn't pay out well, then we would own a tractor larger than we need on a day to day basis or our own gardening and chores, included snow in the winter.

Now, for my 2 cents... Take the $1750 from the sale of your blade and set it aside in your mind. Rent a tractor to cultivate this season. No need to lock yourself into a new, used or borrowed tractor until you get into the season and see if it'll turn a profit for you.
