Do you grease your hitch ball

Reese used to sell a 'teflon' grease for for the hitch ball.
Been looking for another jar for weeks. Had my tools in storage and all my goodies stolen.
So this is just another item that needs replacing.
Yes by all means lubricate. I pulled the trailer to the dump hauling fencing material and made a horrendous squealing racket.
Next day sprayed with a lithium rattle can. Hauled more stuff next day and voila', where'd dat noise go???
Agree with spraying the coupling underneath and a light coat to the ball and wiping off excess and just leave a thin film.
BTW, if anyone knows where to get this teflon lubricant........ahem post a link please..?

Why not fix the ground wire on your trailer lights? Then it won't be trying to ground through the hitch ball?

Aaron Z

I was thinking the same thing. :confused3:

Lemme ask you "non greasers" a question. Do you grease you PTO stub splines? Haven't you all seen a old rusty worn out PTO shaft on some old tractor that hasn't seen a drop of grease in 40 years? I sure have. You grease the PTO stub for the same reasons you grease you hitch ball, to help prevent wear and make the mating easier. You keep the supplied cover on your PTO shaft for the same reasons to prevent dirt and debris from collecting on the shaft. Just like you keep a trailer hitch ball cover on when not in use.

I grease the PTO splines to make it easier to get the shaft on and off. There is no friction to cause wear. That's what the splines are for. I don't know what you were looking at, but it wasn't friction wear. I grease the U-joints on the shaft because dry bearings die. An occasional shot of rattle can keeps the ball from rusting, but I grease the trailer hitch almost every time I use it. My utility trailer is at least 70 years old, since I played on it as a toddler. Trailer balls come and go, but the hitch has to last.

PB blaster has a spray lube that I use sparingly on the the ball occasionally. It is also good to use a bit on a chain saw bar after sharpening the chain. I used blaster for years for loosening but they came out with this multi purpose lubricant and the stuffs really useful. Really works well on the PTO and the spring loaded coupler .

I haven't used my machine much yet, but I have shot the PTO splines already. I noticed surface rust already and though I know it's tough steel, I'd like to be able to connect and disconnect easily.

Diggin it - once you get your PTO all nice & clean - - you need to put a rubber sleeve on it. I goop my PTO with grease and then slip on the rubber sleeve. Keep it all nice and clean and rust free. The M6040 came with the sleeve.

I think they all do, At least my Kuboto's and Kioti all came with one.

So lets bottom line it:

If you don't grease, your ball and coupler will wear out faster
If you are relying on the hitch ball for your electrical ground, you are making a mistake in the first place.
You run a better chance of loosening your hitch ball if you run it dry and squeaky.

Downside to the greasing is the mess potential and dirt attraction. Both can be mitigated by cleaning and covering with a cover. And then their is SLOTH. Lots of people are slothful and don't want to do any more maintenance than they have to.

They then attempt to justify their sloth by using excuses that it might get their wife's dress dirty. Why yes it will if you con't clean and cover.

One of the best time worn excuses is "I don't have time" Bravo Sierra. If you have time to post on TBN, you have time for almost anything.

So Guys, get out there and grease those balls.

I never clued in as to why the tennis ball. I thought people were just highly protective of their precious Chrome Ball, or to keep those I have heard about that will (for whatever reason) suck the chrome off of your trailer hitch

Thanks for the lowes link. I use start page as search engine and and noticed while searching parts for a troybilt mower was getting very poor results.
So thanks again!

Sure could use a newer/fresh one of those "suck the chrome off your trailer hitch" things.
The old one is kinda worn out.
